Senator Ted Cruz addressed the audience at The American Spectator 2013 Robert L. Bartley Gala on October 23. It was Cruz’s first major speech since the government shutdown ended, and his last speech before he hit the campaign trail in Iowa:
Here are some excerpts:
“Well, we’re at the end of the evening and I will tell you I will do my very best to try and keep my remarks under 21 hours, but you will know that I am nearing the end when I pull out and begin to read The Cat in the Hat. Look, 21 hours is a long time. It’s a really long time. I mean, it’s almost as long as it takes to sign up on the Obamacare website.”
“I think we ought to be relentlessly, tirelessly, exclusively, focused on growth because every other priority we have depends on growth. If you want to turn around unemployment, you need growth. If you want to turn around the deficit and the debt, you’ve got to have growth. If you want to save Social Security and Medicare going forward, you’ve got to have growth. If you want to maintain the strongest military in the world to protect our national security, you’ve got to have growth.”
“How did Reagan win the Cold War? He won the Cold War, number one by standing up to the Soviet Union, but number two by unleashing economic growth that bankrupted the Soviet Union when they tried to keep up with us. When our economy is moving, no one can keep up with us. So I’m going to submit to you: Our first priority should be growth.”

And a few others here - he’s pretty well liked on the Texas board, as opposed to that other guy who shall remain unnamed, and unbeloved (at least by me.) ;-)
I gladly share.
I started as a volunteer on his campaign Fed 2011
and worked hard through it all.
When he first started out he was really really unknown and was easy to get to know. There weren’t than many of us back then
I couldn’t have been prouder of him primary night when he best Dudhurst
or so I thought until he got to DC and lived up ot his campaign promises over and over

There is a long line of those of us who do not love the other guy. Recd a robodial call on our business line today from Huckabee who is out pimping for “Conservative Senators who are up for re-election” including our other guy. Gave the caller ten minutes of my opinion on several of them including Graham, McConnell and our other guy. At the end he asked what Senators I would support and I told him Cruz and Lee. Then he said, “I guess we shouldn’t count on your financial support in the future for our candidates, should we?” Duh!
A great speech and a great way to escape the constant barrage of media telling us that moderation is the key to Republican victories.
“Ted” makes him sound...not foreign...or “Hispanic.”
His given name is Raphael, not “Ted my beer-drinking buddy down the block.” He’s Cuban.
Practically, he’s just the flavor of the month for the hoverround crowd. They’re desperate for leadership.
A slick Canadian lawyer, is all Cruz is, who’s never introduced original legislation, heads no committees and who the real world ignores.
He’s smarmy. Reminds me of Joel Osteen.
/For the record...I’ve been married to a Cuban-American for 25+ years. My attitude has nothing to do with his nationality. I even have friends who are Canadian!
“Heading committees” is not on my list of requirements for a good representative.
As a conservative, he might not WANT to introduce legislation. Writing up more laws is what liberals do.
There’s nothing smarmy about him. He’s a straight-talking kind of guy, not a Reid, Pelosi or Obama.
Tell us who your perfect candidate is if not Cruz.
I don’t have a preferred candidate.
The R party at the national level is too corrupted by the Big Bucks right now to appeal to any but the naive.
And before I was old enough to vote, I broke my political baby teeth working on Reagan’s first campaign against JC. Seen lots of them come and go.
Cruz reads speeches written by other people. He’s notorious for following written scripts.
He’s not “plain-spoken.” That’s a pose. He’s a trained lawyer...a liar for hire. His public face is being carefully choreographed now that Rubio is no longer the “acceptable Hispanic” for the low-information types.
And Cruz is slick and oily. The yuch factor is high. In six months, he’ll be replaced with someone else as the working class hero. Just watch.
Not buying all that. The “R”s are surely corrupted by big money, but Cruz was not the guy the establishment wanted in the Senate. The disgust many of the other Senators and congressmen expressed for him is convincing to me. I think Rubio is still the establishment’s preferred latino. I find it hard to believe everything he said during 19 hours on the Senate floor was scripted. You can also listen to his dad for some genuine unscripted political opinions, and the younger Cruz doesn’t appear to have fallen far from the tree.
Can’t speak to Cruz’ “oiliness” but I just don’t see it. I don’t hate all lawyers. Look at his history of court cases and you can see he’s been fighting on the right side for a long time, against the progressives and ACLU. He helped strike down the D.C. handgun ban, defended display of the 10 commandments in a courthouse, defended the pledge of allegiance being spoken in schools, defended Texas redistricting and defended an international body’s push to reopen death penalty cases in the U.S.
