Arnold Schwarzenegger won re-election handily in 2006, defeating his hapless opponent Phil Angelides by a 56% to 38.9% margin. Yet this sizable win was a meaningless victory for the GOP. Similarly, Chris Christies thumping victory on Tuesday night over an equally forgettable candidate contains almost no national meaning, save that Chris Christie is good for Chris Christie. Like Schwarzenegger, Christie cruised to re-election not as a real Republican but as a preening non-partisan moderate. Like Schwarzenegger, Christies popularity hasnt translated into any support for Republicans in his own legislature.
Which raises the question: How could Christie turn blue states red nationwide if he cant turn his own legislature red?
The breathless burbling about how Chris Christies victory shows the path forward for the GOP conveniently ignores his inability to turn New Jersey red for anyone but himself. Before election day, the New Jersey media didnt see any reason for the Dems to worry about a Christie victory, as they enjoy a 48-32 majority in the Assembly and a 24-16 lead in the state Senate. While these numbers may change, early reports indicate most incumbents will be reelected. The New Jersey media reported that most polls indicate support for Christie wont help any down-ballot Republicans. In 2009, Christies coat-tail effect was negligible too, resulting in only one new Assembly seat for the Republicans.
Like Schwarzenegger, Christie is a useful idiot for the Democratsa needy, politically correct, ruling-class Republican who is trending liberal on everything from climate change to gay marriage to size-of-government issues. Christie loves the liberal limelighta trait that will only intensify over time. The Democrats know a Trojan Horse when they see one.
Of course, establishment Republicansthe same geniuses who parachuted Schwarzenegger into office to the long-term detriment of their partywill ooh and ahh over Christies victory and argue that Tuesdays results,.....

No doubt about it.
Ted Cruz Ping!
If you want on/off this ping list, please let me know.
Please beware, this is a high-volume ping list!
Paul is great but too tied to his father.
Sarah, I'm just not sure she has the stomach for it.
Mike Lee is lower on the radar screen, but I think would be a softer spoken version of Ted Cruz. He might bring in a few more moderate squish votes, but he would lose an equal number of Hispanic pride votes. Plus, I don't think he has any interest.
The political reality is that we need at least one female or minority on the ticket.
But we first have to unite behind any of these four to prevent the Michelin Man from a GOPe coronation.
So it was Christie or Jon Corzine's ditzy corrupt financial harpie Buono. Dirt or crap - eat one.
Christie will NOT get my vote for President. Ever. Ever. If they nominate him I will absolutely vote third party. I obviously live in NJ anyway, so our electoral votes are guaran-effing-teed to go the Dem nominee anyway - even if our sitting governor is the GOP nominee.
Why would a midget move to Midgetville, when his only distinguishing cachet is that he's a midget in a normal height town.
Sorry Christie would not get my vote unless he is running for CEO of Krispy Kreme. Otherwise...NADA, NIL, ZILCH!!
Bill Bennett got a caller in this morning that said “Bill you need to stop calling Christie a Conservative”...and there in lies the problem. We have talk show radio hosts who are either “in the beltway thinkers” like Bennett or Hugh Hewett and they are ALREADY PUSHING CHRIS CHRISTIE on us...STOP IT PLEASE! I am fed up of the “inside the beltway thinking”...either get out in the real world or go run for something yourself and get out of radio because you are no longer affective!
Christie is so fat when it rains, he uses the Garden State Parkway as a slip n slide ;)
Cruz simply by running for Pres would destroy Christie’s chances no doubt that. Which would give us Hillary but what the hell..little diff between them anyway.
They use Christie to test the structural integrity of the newly reconstructed boardwalks on the Jersey shore.
The clintons will polish off this fat turd with a media wrapped bow on him a week after the GOPe flushes Christie on the rest of the party.
What's wrong with Mike Lee?
I don’t think Mike Lee wants it. I think he is happy in the Senate. We need about 50 more just like him.
