NBC News projects Democratic businessman Terry McAuliffe will defeat Republican Ken Cuccinelli to become Virginias next governor after a contentious race that appeared closer than many political watchers anticipated with votes still to be counted.
Exit polls showed McAuliffes support among women and in the Democrat-leaning northern part of the state was enough to top the states attorney general in a race that had Cuccinelli fighting back against a litany of ads painting him as too extreme for the states moderate voters. However, voters cited the economy and health care as the issues most important to them, and Cuccinelli beat his Democratic rival in both categories, helping to keep the contest tight throughout Tuesday evening.
Libertarian Robert Sarvis received less than 10 percent of the vote as a third-party candidate.

I'd like to see some numbers. I would really appreciate some numbers.
5.56mm
sure nice of all the eGop bigwigs campaigning for him..
oh wait..
Never mind that if the economy was truly an over-arching factor, it’d have to push things in Cuccinelli’s favor.
Very unfortunate.
“Narrowly”?
Kind of hedging their bets aren’t they?
The GOP-e must think that they can keep this game up forever. The race being this close ought to make them think twice.
“Them” is exactly it. Now it is up to US to make people aware the GOP is NOT on “our” side. They are on Governments side, i.e. with the Democrats and enriching themselves first and doing the will of the voter next, maybe third or fourth even.
I got these off the Virginia Board of elections site. Just in, with 98.11% reporting:
Cuccinelli (R) - 942,939 45.81%
McAuliffe (D) - 976,306 47.43%
Sarvis (L) - 136,203 6.62%
Write In - 2,785 0.14%
I’m sorry, but please tell me you folks are not shocked by this. I never had a doubt.
Never had a doubt of what?
That it’d be this close when the papers were saying otherwise?
When the GOP wants to be cool, they don’t support their candidate.
Can I be cool be not supporting the GOP?
Never mind cuz I WONT SUPPORT THE LIBERAL GOP ANYWAY.

1.61% margin to the Dem, with 1.98% left to report. Very close and could get closer.
Wrong. Virginia should be solidly red, but it like many other formerly conservative bastions has sold its soul for the drippings of the beast.
I never had a doubt “The Punk” would win.
The Empire strikes back.
The state of Virginia now has only one political purpose: To launder money for Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
Not too many thought otherwise either.
Oh, and BTW, just a quick shout out to Sarvis. Hope your 6% was worth. Just enough to help seal Cuccinelli’s fate.
