Lindsey Graham: The Bipartisan Dealmaker Finds Issues to Please GOP Base
swampland.time.com ^ | 11/5/13 | Alex Altman

Congressional incumbents have two basic routes to re-election. One is to tack sharply toward the base, leaving only the narrowest of lanes for a primary challenger to outflank you. Most of the 11 Republican Senators up for re-election in 2014 have chosen this strategy. A few others, including Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell and Lamar Alexander, take the second path, calculating that the best way to stay in Washington is to emphasize their clout inside the Capitol.

Then there is a little-traveled third path: the one blazed by South Carolina’s Lindsey Graham.

The garrulous two-term Republican Senator is a rare Washington species: a Southern conservative who whiplashes between base courting and bridge building. His love for cutting deals has weathered this bitter political season, and yet there are few better at using wedge issues to whip the GOP into a frenzy.

Graham was one of four Republican Senators who crafted a controversial proposal this year to rewrite U.S. immigration laws, and the only one who doesn’t hail from a border state with a large Hispanic population. During Barack Obama’s first term, Graham flirted with the White House over issues ranging from climate change to closing the prison facility at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. In recent weeks, he was an outspoken opponent of the effort to defund the President’s health care law by linking it to must-pass legislation to fund the government.

Not a chance. We know that Graham has held the voters in his home state in abject contempt for years.

Did you know that GW Bush, who is so fastidious and cute about not getting involved in any politics, has endorsed Graham in this primary and donated to him?

RINOs look after RINOs.

Interesting that none of the strategies to get re-elected include honestly representing the will of your constituents.

Fooled or not, this is a rigged game. He will be reelected. We must repeal the 17th amendment which allows the direct election of senators.

Exactly. They've already censured him a couple of times now. The only thing left to do is vote his arse out.

One of the things I do when listening to candidates (and others) speak is to listen to how they use "we" when talking. A simple example - When Ronald Reagan was speaking and used the word "we", he was talking about "we the people." When Obama uses "we", he is talking about the government. Virtually all the Dems do the same thing. It depends on the meaning of "we."

I see all of a sudden he is going to shutdown the Senate nominating process, after siding with Obama on nearly every bill for the past 3 years.

Like my husband says, McCain, Graham and their ilk are plenty “conservative” when it doesn’t count. When the time comes for a crucial vote, they choose “bipartisanship” every time.

I don't object to his making deals, just that he's so bad at it. Every deal he makes gives away a little bit more of the farm. Maybe if he won one now and again...

“I see all of a sudden he is going to shutdown the Senate nominating process, after siding with Obama on nearly every bill for the past 3 years.”

Not only that. He’s now pushing a 20 week abortion bill. As if the people of South Carolina are mindless robots.

Graham will be below 50% in the primary and whoever is running against him in the runoff (likely Bright) will take him out. His every six-year conservatism will not work this time.

This sudden conversiion from Grahamnesty agreeing with Obama on nearly everything (Gun control, amnesty, budgets) to such a fighting conservative is remarkable.

If you move the ball down the field to socialism, it doesn’t matter if its 4 yards a carry or 10 yards a carry—you still end up in the same place. The best that RINOS can do is delay the inevitable-for a few minutes at best.

What we need is restoration of the Constitution:
