33-year old Kodjo Afate Gnikou has imagination, talent and ambition.
Using rails and belts from old scanners, the case of a discarded desktop computer and even bits of a diskette drive, Gnikou has created what is believed to be the first 3D printer made from e-waste.
Afate has been working on this experimental device for several months. He calls it W.AFATE, a composition of "W" WoeLab, and "Afate".
Afate launched his project on ulule, an European crowdfunding site earlier this year, and raised more than 4,000 euro from supporters. The fund helped Afate support the cost of the original investment in time and equipment. W.AFATE 3D printer is now a working prototype. Some elements had to be bought new but, in all, his printer cost him 100 US dollars to build.
Afate says his printer can be useful on a daily basis as it can print various utensils needed in any household, that are not always easy to get hold of in west Africa.
But he believes this model is only the prototype for something much larger. His aim is to one day transport e-waste to Mars to create homes for mankind.
"My dream is to give young people hope and to show that Africa, too, has its place on the global market when it comes to technology. We are able to create things. Why is Africa always lagging behind when it comes to technology?", he asks.
Though some have called him a dreamer, his hard work has paid off as the young inventor has been rewarded with the NASA International Space Apps Challenge in Paris.

However, the African-American culture discourages innovation and self-improvement; and study and learning. By default, the AA community needs to remain victims, remaining in perpetual need of outside help.
And until there is an attitude change by that community, there is going to be no progress.
Only indicates he is on the right side of the bell curve and can copy that which has already been invented using parts built by others.
Other than that, rather impressive use of “waste”.
Give me 4000 Euros and I can probably make something out of “waste” too.
Their BIGGEST problem is time. Sadly, they’re either scrounging for enough to eat, running from machete wielding guys from another tribe or reloading the mags of THEIR AKs.
That said, I congratulate this young man. Now can print new magazines and machetes for his friends.
The fact that there are black geniuses says little about the distribution of talent or the mean intelligence of the entire population, and especially the American sub-population.
Larry Summers got ridiculed out of Harvard for observing that women and men's intelligence might have identical mean values, but differ in dispersion.
It isn’t a lack of intelligence per se. It’s the buy in to a culture of know nothing do nothing.
I think it is culture.
Europeans had the same murder rate as black urban subcultures do today. It is likely a drop back to the human default programing, tribal culture. We call the modern tribes “gangs”:

Maybe you're right; I'd like to believe you are. It's also possible that environmental conditions in Africa having nothing to do with melatonin have selected for robustness rather than intelligence. It doesn't really matter what the reason is, since we have to deal with the existing characteristics of the AA population as a group. Individuals of course, are a different matter.
not really. in every demo group there are very smart individuals. the differences are what are the groups’ average iq’s/intelligence, and what shape each groups bell curve takes.
blacks are consistent underperformers and in general have lower iqs/intelligence than other groups.
