Nicknamed "Fat Leonard," the gregarious Malaysian businessman is well known by U.S. Navy commanders in the Pacific, where his company has serviced warships for 25 years.
But prosecutors in court papers say Leonard Francis worked his connections to obtain military secrets by lining up hookers, Lady Gaga tickets and other bribes for a U.S. commander, in a scandal reverberating across the Navy.
The accusations unfolding in a federal court case in San Diego signal serious national security breaches and corruption, setting off high-level meetings at the Pentagon with the threat that more people, including those of higher ranks, could be swept up as the investigation continues. A hearing Nov. 8 could set a trial date.
Navy commander Michael Vannak Khem Misiewicz passed confidential information on ship routes to Francis' Singapore-based company, Glenn Defense Marine Asia Ltd., or GDMA, according to the court documents.
Misiewicz and Francis moved Navy vessels like chess pieces, diverting aircraft carriers, destroyers and other ships to Asian ports with lax oversight where Francis could inflate costs, according to the criminal complaint. The firm overcharged the Navy millions for fuel, food and other services it provided, and invented tariffs by using phony port authorities, the prosecution alleges.

Really quite tragic, if true. Mis’ story is a pretty compelling one (rescued from Khmer Rouge, made it in America, and so on). I think there have been stories posted about him on FR before.
Still, compelling story or not, if he was complicit in the crimes he is accused of, he deserves what is coming to him, IMAAO (in my armchair admiral opinion).

I can’t speak for the Navy but with the Army...anyone that wants to be an officer can be one. Certain ‘select’ groups are openly recruited with guarantees of successful completion of OCS.
Power truly does corrupt.
If this is true, he deserves his fate. It should be commonsense that, if you’re in the military, you can never afford to be compromised for even a little bit.

I bet that ‘Commander’ had EXACTLY the right number of gay/lesbian/bisexual/homo “sailors” in PRECISELY the “correct” ratio that the Pentagon prescribes.
What else is really important, after all??

Something is very strange here. The Navy I know would never ever in a million years find enough people who would even want to go see Lady Gaga must less some officer risking his entire career over this insanity. The hookers, um, yes, unfortunately. I still don’t know a single normal Navy person who even listens to her.... now I do know a couple of Rainbow Warriors who would, but this is insane. Somewhere in the 2000’s, I must have been beemed up to someplace I don’t even recognize as America anymore.
