As Bush Settles Into Dallas, Golf Tees and Family Time Now Trump Politics

DALLAS — When the executive director of former President George W. Bush’s public policy institute decided to move on recently, he stopped by for an exit interview. Mr. Bush asked if he had anything in particular he wanted to talk about.

Nothing specific, said James K. Glassman, the departing director.

“O.K.,” Mr. Bush replied, “I want to talk about painting.”

After early self-portraits in the shower and then dozens of paintings of dogs and cats, Mr. Bush, it seems, has now moved on to world leaders. He told Mr. Glassman that he wanted to produce portraits of 19 foreign presidents and prime ministers he worked with during his time in the White House.

Nearly five years after leaving office, the nation’s 43rd president lives a life of self-imposed exile in Texas, more interested in painting than politics, recovering from a heart scare, privately worried about the rise of the Tea Party, golfing with fervor, bicycling with wounded veterans and enjoying a modest revival in public opinion. While Bill Clinton criticizes Republicans on the campaign trail and Dick Cheney chastises the current administration on his book tour, Mr. Bush resolutely stays out of the public debate.

Your employment of servants-nannies etc is hardly Bush league.

For the older George and Barbara Bush household it was a way of life. And what GW grew up in

so what?

If I could afford it, I’d have a cook too

as it is I rely on the deli section of the grocery story to be my cook

If I wanted the hassle, I’d have a cleaning service

big whoop

why be jealous?

I hope for the same for myself someday—I would love to be pampered and secure. Don’t want a world where there is nothin to hope for.

Maybe you have that wierdness where you are supposed to do everything for yourself and not provide any jobs for helpers. Fine. Suit yourself. But don’t tell me I can’t have a personal secretary or a driver if I want one. (Which I might well have if I had the cash.)

And don’t hate someone else because they do.

If you would rather spend your savings on a cook or a trip to the beach or an ATV what the hell business is it of mine?

As far as I know, GWB has been somewhat supportive of the Tea Party movement, only offering a cautionary word against isolationism, protectionism, and “nativism.”

Not defending his presidency or his politics, I just think the NYT is firing for effect here.

Horsecrap. calling GWB a “rabid socialist” is barking, raving crazy,

LOL. I stand by my words

If our Founders were alive they would call Bush much, much worse.

It is sad how far our Republic has strayed from its Founding.

It is truly sad how many Freepers cling to the notion that Bush was anything but a rabid Socialist.

what’s sad is how many conservative jacobins there are, and how infrequently they are called upon to explain themselves.

Yes, raving mad. Please document how Bush (or anyone you call ‘socialist’) followed, expressed and implemented socialist ideology. It’s not enough to call everything and everyone you dislike ‘socialist’ or ‘communist’ which is how the left operates, calling people they don’t like ‘fascist’. You’ve got to know what these terms mean.

I used to be very loyal to the Bushistas, to the point that I defended the drunken Bush twins as they played underage barflies...only to learn that loyalty to the Bushes was strictly a one way street.

There were little, nasty things they would say. Like, Texas was not the south but the west. Excuse me? When I went to high school football games in Texas, they played Dixie and brandished the rebel flag. W may have a mouthful of mush, but most people who have lived in Texas sound like they are from Tennessee.

Of course, at that time W was going to some Kennedy prep school in New England. He wouldn't know about going to a public high school in Texas.

And all the amnesty backstabbing. And the insulting "compassionate conservatism"--like Poppy knew a New World Order way of going about things, an the Constitution, freedom and the rule of law were not compassionate? Then there was the fatuous "brown people" condescension.

Please go away, Bushes, and shut up.

Ah, well. Ok, as long as your irrational hatred for the bushes isn’t hysterical or semi-delusional, or anything.

(holy crap !!!!)

heaven forfend that anyone ever get the whole “texas is western, not southern” thing wrong again. Such an unpardonable sin. and college kids drinking? That’s a perfectly valid reason to hate their father, despise his politics, and condemn 8 years of the nation’s history.

you have BDS worse than harry reid on his worse day. and you sound like him.

I, for one, agree with you. The Bushies have done more to undermine conservatism than Nancy Pelosi on her best day. I wish them well in what I hope will be their permanent status as private citizens.

So what about the tax cut? How did that Iraq War thing work out for conservatives? How is it working out for Iraqis for that matter?

some milquetoast will get the nomination and lose in the general, and the “true” conservatives will try to find someone else to blame rather than themselves. I’ve been watching it for years.

Sounds like you are describing Bush during the entirety of his second term. He was so unpopular, he appeared at the 2008 RNC via Jumbotron.

So, why isn't your Precious out helping Cucinelli, today?

Couldn't be because Bush might prefer the pro-Amnesty and pro-Abortion McCauliffe?

Saving the Bushes is for Rovians.

You're not arguing like a conservative. It's a liberal who is always focusing on the state of mind of a critic. If Bush was black, you'd be calling me a racist.

There’s an article on Breitbart today that shows how the RINOs like Bush are quietly supporting McCauliffe in VA.

because he knew it would annoy you, personally. and the former leader of the free world has nothing better to do with his time than annoy someone on a message board.

Since you made free to speculate on my own emotional state, should I get to know if you’re here to support Karl Rove and the rest of the RINOs? Maybe being paid to provide a RINO presence on FR and be at the ready to promote the future Jeb (fatso) Bush candidacy?
