As Bush Settles Into Dallas, Golf Tees and Family Time Now Trump Politics

DALLAS — When the executive director of former President George W. Bush’s public policy institute decided to move on recently, he stopped by for an exit interview. Mr. Bush asked if he had anything in particular he wanted to talk about.

Nothing specific, said James K. Glassman, the departing director.

“O.K.,” Mr. Bush replied, “I want to talk about painting.”

After early self-portraits in the shower and then dozens of paintings of dogs and cats, Mr. Bush, it seems, has now moved on to world leaders. He told Mr. Glassman that he wanted to produce portraits of 19 foreign presidents and prime ministers he worked with during his time in the White House.

Nearly five years after leaving office, the nation’s 43rd president lives a life of self-imposed exile in Texas, more interested in painting than politics, recovering from a heart scare, privately worried about the rise of the Tea Party, golfing with fervor, bicycling with wounded veterans and enjoying a modest revival in public opinion. While Bill Clinton criticizes Republicans on the campaign trail and Dick Cheney chastises the current administration on his book tour, Mr. Bush resolutely stays out of the public debate.

Did ok on the war”

Really? Iraq disintegrated into chaos, and its Christians were put to flight by the Islamist radical shiites who were empowered by the US invasion when it removed their oppressor, Saddam.

Was this really worth 4000 US lives and $1 trillion (most of it borrowed from China)?

good point about the Iraq war leading directly to the enactment of Obamacare. Voters punished the GOP for the Iraq disaster by electiing a Democrat congress and prez.

No, the telling moment on "W" for me came very early.

Remember that nice turn of phrase he used during the 2000 campaign, about the manner in which minorities are treated in the public education system? "The Soft Bigotry of Low Expectations", W said. We'd treat people equally, as we honestly believe that all men are created equal.

And I bought that, hook, line and sinker.

Then what did W do as soon as he got into office? He turned over his Education plan to Teddy, the Women, Children, and Oldsmobile killing Senator now representing Hell. He didn't stick up one second for his original plan.

That told me volumes about W. He had moments right after 9/11, but overall? Overwhelmingly a putz.

Agreed 100%.

There are people, and more than a few on this Site who see what would have been a Romney Presidency as equal to the current Obama Presidency.

Best you not get sucked into that Debate, it gets nasty.

I'm not a fan of RINO’s, but my Red Line begins with Race Baiting, Community Rabble Rousing Liars with a Stalin complex.

The First Gulf War wasn’t worth it neither.

Why should we get involved in intra-Arab squabbles?

If Bush was a great president, why dont Republican candidates want to be seen with him? Can you imagine a GOP candidate giving up an opportunity to be photographed with Reagan? But none of them want Bush anywhere near them, at least where cameras are present.

Thanks:)

I’m relatively new to posting here, and still learning my way around. I suspected posting on this thread was stepping on a landmine, but I felt the need to stick up for the little Bush. He got me interested in politics.

If Reagan was alive right now, you would probably be bitching about him, too. There was a whole wing of the conservative movement — not huge, but it was there — for whom Ronald Reagan wasn’t pure enough.

Gee, for me it was “Compassionate Conservative”.

Talk about walking into a Liberal Spider Web, with that one line Bush gave the Liberals complete vindication of what they always imagined Conservatives to be. I actually remember cringing when I first heard him say that.

We were Meanies, and Bush would drag us toward the light to a Liberal feel good Utopia.

“I’m sure he did his best, but we needed someone better.”

General statements do no one any good. Name a name of who would have done better.

“But none of them want Bush anywhere near them, at least where cameras are present.”

And that is the fault of the media, turning him into a devil that he never was.

He was put into a position where everyone in the world believed there were WMD in Iraq. He had to make a decision. He made an incorrect one, but he stood by it. Lesson learned, now let’s stay far away from Arab politics.

Ah, yes. Back in the halcyon days of "Changing The Tone". When Bush thought Washington was just like Austin...

Bush was what he was, a RINO, but he loves America. After the constant Media attacks he endured, even before taking Office, day in and day out, even his Supporters turned on him mouthing the Leftist lies and DNC Propaganda.

When I hear a Lib whining about how poor little Obama is treated, I have to ask whether they had just come out of a Ten Year long Coma.

All you gotta do now to be part of the vast right wing conspiracy is ask an honest question about something like a deductible. That’s all it takes to be a racist right now. I blame Obamacare on Romney for sucking. Above all else, we need to win the damn elections.

Bush did untold damage to the GOP. This man was an abject idiot!

I never want to see another freakin’ Bush run for Federal Office! I wish that family would just go away!

angle, o’donnell, akin, and mourdock

BS. You cannot support a person who makes a commercial saying, “I am not a witch” in a Senate Campaign. I know some of you ate that commercial up, but running for Senate. O’Donnell was the worst candidate in the history of the United States. Angle probably should have won. Akin and Murdock lost their seats on their own.

I always forget. I’ll give Harry Reid a call and find out.
