The trouble with using any time of chemical weapon is that they only work well against unarmed civilians. For those with any protective weapons, high explosives and projectiles are far more effective.
Now imagine what happens when paramilitary police armed with less than lethal weapons meet up with civilians that have projectile weapons. You end up with a lot of dead paramilitaries.
An essential flaw in the thinking of the left is that they truly believe that military personnel are unthinking dullards who obey orders without question. As one of them remarked, “They joined the military because they were too dumb to work in fast food.”
At the same time, using this as an axiom, the left assume that if you issue a street thug military style equipment, that he will be just as effective as a trained soldier.
This leads to idiocies like Obama wanting to create a huge domestic army just as large and powerful as the military, to enforce his ideas about a police state. The ghetto gang bangers they recruited to do this were, well, below par.
It’s no surprise that they soon turned to other ideas, without, of course, learning their lesson.
So they hired a whole bunch of losers and welfare babies to work for DHS, and gave them each a Glock .40 and ammo, and assumed that if needed they can control millions of civilians, many of whom are veterans and even combat veterans, who are armed with every non-fully-automatic weapon ever made.
The end result of this is that they are even less effective than the Nazi’s Sturmabteilung (SA) (the brownshirts), who were criminals and street thugs put in uniforms and told to control the German people. All they knew was how to bully the weak. In a real fight, they folded like a house of cards.
And, once again, the DHS are even less effective than them.

That's why they sent bicycle cops into a herd of angry WWII vets.
They we hoping that they would get killed or hurt so they could bring out the lethal weapons and sweep the area clean.
The essential flaw is that unlike their side, ours has manners and restraint. They simply couldn't imagine their sacrificial piggies would walk away unscathed.
Unfortunately, our restraint isn't unlimited.
Bigger issue: not that many people will have any interest in walking into a gunfight (in which they will NOT have overwhelming force on their side) for just a government paycheck.
The brave men of our military do not fight just because somebody is giving them a meager paycheck.
