Very shallow and on land. Depth = 5.8 miles.
Calm b4 the storm ... ;^)
No aftershocks recorded by USGS as yet - stay alert and cautious.
been to taiwan a few times.
the east side, where this quake struck, is mostly mountainous and for the most part, uninhabited, except for scattered villages, etc.
most population lives on the coastal plains, on the west side....taipei to the north, down to the southern tip. very densely populated on the west coast.
I have been to the top of Taipei 101...they have some fascinating anti-quake engineering designed into that building...it is cool still, would not like to be up there during a 6+
Neither would I, lol. Amazing they would build such tall building in such an earthquake prone area. Hope their technology works!
It has been awhile..we’re definitely due.
Hualien is a beautiful place. It’s very close to Taroko Gorge, which is amazing. There are some stunning temples and pagodas built on cliffs around there. I wonder how they fared.
This quake may be closer to Taitung, but I’m not sure.
Yep been monitoring this event....looks to me like it certainly could be just a foreshock.
Indeed something to watch and see there has been aftershocks so perhaps not but but but....lol
thanks for the ping. i’m going to look for damage reports.
(after i clear my allergy/sinus, blah)
earthquake-report has some info on a few injuries. hope it still is low on the injury/damage.

Many are reporting it lasted 15 seconds. It lasted much longer than that... That’s a lot of energy when you take the length of time into account which means a lot of movement of something.
Thanks machogirl! That is a very good site with good info.
Well they finally had an aftershock... :-)
welcome
nah the European program detected them right after...not sure why the usgs is delaying after shock reporting.
Notice the USGS ALWAYS downgrades as well...
pretty good quake off the coast of chile
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/usb000kqnc#summary
I see that. Hasn’t been downgraded and about the same depth as the Taiwan quake. Underwater but close to shore.
So far not a single aftershock....reported by Europe or USGS.
