To me I would think that he just told her that he respects her and will never take her for granted. Well maybe I am off the mark and getting more old fashion in my old age, but thats my two cents. I met the woman that became my wife in early 1982. To this day I hold the car door open for her, hold her chair in restaurants, etc....
I don't see any reason not to.
