The revelation came after Germany's secret service investigated the devices
It warned that they were 'trojan horses' capable of fishing for information
Warnings have gone out to every government that received them
America’s NSA spy agency has been under fire from around the world for its surveillance activity over the past few months.
Now the Russians are facing criticism for some allegedly shady operations, too.
It’s claimed that USB drives and phone chargers, given to world leaders at the G20 summit in Russia were 'Trojan horses' capable of sending data back to the Kremlin.
David Cameron did not receive one of the USB sticks, Downing Street insisted.
But No 10 did not rule out the possibility that officials were given one of the pen drives that is said to have contained a Trojan horse programme allowing sensitive documents stored on laptops to be accessed.
German secret services reportedly discovered that the gadgets, given out to all delegates at the meeting of world leaders in St Petersburg last month, were able to retrieve data for use by the Russians.

This ploy has been used several times now to great effect. “I’m just not a computer guy” is the usual excuse from the people who bring that crap into the network.
Thee real story: Everybody knew the pen drives were “spy devices” (by definition, practically). Some effort was made to use them to feed false data to the Kremlin.
Whatever success that effort had is now destroyed because Obama’s CIA wants to counter a mild PR blow.
He’s a fool and so is everyone working for him.

i was in China when Clinton visited, and White House and Embassy staff built tents in their local hotel rooms for meetings and kept rock music playing constantly - so being spied upon is assumed.
I don’t think any national politician would stupid enough to accept and use such a gift. Perhaps the hope is some low-level schlub finds and uses it, providing some kind of intel or access that way.

There is a very cheap handy talkie (ham radio portable radio) made in China that is selling well in the US. An acquaintance is an IT security guy, and he told us the disc that came with it had some spy ware on it that lit up all kinds of deep bells and whistles when he went to install it. EVERYBODY is subject to spying..... not just from the NSA

I remember reading that someone had whipped up a big batch of compromised USB thumb drives and flung them over the fence into the Pentagon parking lot.

I remember a story posted on FR a while back about a Microsoft team doing a quality inspection on a laptop/hdd factory in China found that everyone of them was loaded with spyware and malware.... right there in the factory.
