Except in Illionois. A few years ago, about 2007, Illinois changed the law to bring these antique and antique replica blackpowder firearms under Illinois authority and requires a FOID card to possess.

Try to find a Ruger “Old Army”. It is a beefed-up version of an 1858 Remington. They are sturdy, accurate and powerful, particularly when stoked with conical bullets.
