Santorum is no liberal, but he is a pragmatic. Able to see the failure of Santorum, Ted Cruz recognizes that GOP-e types like John Cornyn hate conservatives even more than people like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, if that even is possible, and that you can’t work with them.
Never forget that the GOP-e supported Gerald Ford, even as Reagan was smashing through the 1976 Republican primaries, nominating him even though he was hated in every corner of America and would (and did) certainly lose to the most ridiculous goober the Democrats could dig up.
Then in the 1980, when Ronald Reagan could win simply by saying, “See, I told you so,” the GOP-e desperately ran another Republican in the general election, trying to siphon enough votes off Reagan to re-elect Carter.
That’s right, folks: the GOP-e supported Carter over Reagan. And that’s when most of the Southern leadership of the GOP — that is, the rest of the GOP-e — were Democrats.
Then to hedge their bets they foisted Bush as Reagan's VP, ensuring the return of the old guard once Reagan was out of office.
I use the term “pro life liberal” to make a point. Is RS a liberal? No. But he gets credit for being this great conservative simply because he is very vocal on a few social issues, when his non social record is spotty at best.
Not a liberal, but on non social issues, a moderate at best....and on issues of the estab versus the insurgents, very unreliable......now all those who say Specter was a long time ago have no where to hide.
