That's what you call "Really Big Sky" country then. :-) I was in the Anchorage and Fairbanks areas. Lots of mountains surrounding Anchorage and Fairbanks looks a little like West Texas. I was in Alaska for several years starting in '02. Guess that's why the auroras were so impressive, as '03 was a peak year for CMEs. We also had some pretty large quakes during that time:

He also said that pictures and movies of it in no way do it justice, said you have to see it with your own eyes.
I asked him if he ever heard a *crackling* type of sound when it's really active (been reported some people can hear it), he said he never heard that.
He said there was always a diesel engine running for power somewhere.
