The upstate NY Oneidas started this anti-Redskin movement most recently. They were the only tribe of the Iroquois Nation to fight on the Patriot side against the Brits. We owe them a good listen.
Oops...please take the photo down. Just noticed it was Getty. Sorry.
Except the rabble-rouser who started it was exposed as not being an Oneida at all, but a fake, and Obama bundler.
From what I understand, about 90-95% of Native Americans either like the nam or don’t care about the issue. I suspect the Oneida Tribe is getting paid off by someone like Soros. Snyder said that the name would not be changing and that sort of comment is a challenge to those who would take control of everything that they could in this once freer nation. I think the ‘K’ word is exponentially worse than the term Redskin.
Sure, Giants fans don’t like the Redskins, but they don’t care if short people, or tall people for that matter, are offended.
Cowboys fans don’t like the Redskins either.
So is “Celtics” racist? How about the 49ers? Do the Oakland Athletics show a prejudice against fat people? Perhaps the Oakland Raiders reveal a prejudice against Wall Street brokers? Are the Panthers opposed to a black supremacist political party?
It's my understanding that "kike" is on the level of "honky," "cracker," "Uncle Tom" or "Tío Taco"--almost always used with malice. "Redskin" is only used with malice by rival football fans.
The people who started this are NOT the Oneida Indians. They are political activists.
90% of people are not offended and don't care. A few people in the MSM are stirring this up.
What about the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, Chicago Blackhawks etc.?
Many moons ago tribe move west because Pilgrims ruin neighborhood. Tribe travel west, over country and mountains and wild streams, then come big day... tribe fall over cliff, that when Hekawi get name. Medicine man say to my ancestor, “I think we lost. Where the heck are we?”
no one really gives a chit about the indians. They are not protected class. Screw em they have gaming rights.
I think it’s about radicalizing the natives as it was done the blacks.
My response to liberals when this comes up: how vigorously did you oppose Elizabeth Warren when she ran for the senate seat in Mass? I then point out (when they say they didn’t), that here was a case of a person fraudulently using programs designed to help native americans for her own selfish interests, and the fact that you were silent then, but only are heard on a purely symbolic issue, makes you a racist hypocrite.
It doesn’t win me any friends, but it does silence them rather effectively.
If indians didnt like the name, they shoulda said something when the team first formed. It shouldnt take 80 years to get offended
"Go Redwood Trees" just doesn't have the ring to it, and Cardinal is a darker red color, so "Go Darkies" might cause problems nowadays, but "Go Reds" fits well.
It’s over. The Redskins will be renamed before the 2014 pre-season opens, it’s only a question of how much the team will pay American Indian charities between now and then.
If Snyder were a black instead of a Jew would the Onion have used the “N” word each place it used the “K” word?
No Way.
Therefore, it’s not equivalence that they’re driving for. They’re not courageous....they simply outed themselves as ZwiebelNazis.
Nope.
"They were the only tribe of the Iroquois Nation to fight on the Patriot side against the Brits. We owe them a good listen."
Oh puh-lease. We? Speak for yourself. I owe them approximately jack-squat. Because their ancestors determined that scalping Brits was more profitable than scalping Yankees, we should take their whining about the name of a sports team seriously?
Thanks, but no listen. Redskins, Go Redskins! And, I am not a fan!
If Mr. Snyder changes the name of his team to ANYNAME other than REDSKINS, I move that we strike all “Indian” names from use. No more states, rivers, towns, counties, lakes will be called what they are called today. NO MORE INDIAN NAMES, PERIOD!
Take that you PC Assholes. (not that I feel strongly about this matter)
I remember an Indian baseball team in B.C.’s Chilcotin back in the ‘70s who called themselves the “Wagon-Burners”.
Natives have a great sense of humor, generally.
