Replacing flag officers and even colonels won’t leave a coup up to the NCOs. Flag officers can order whatever they want but if the line commanders, officers, and NCOs don’t go along with unlawful orders then it won’t happen. None of us, active or retired, officer or enlisted, swears any allegiance to a particular flag officer or colonel much less a president. We also were not and are not a bunch of slow-witted, uninformed rubes who will do as we’re told regardless. If you’re going to cite the almost century old Bonus Army incident then you’re off-base too. The army troops did not follow Dugout Doug’s illegal orders to fire on the veterans, that was done by the DC cops before the army came in. Dugout defied the orders of the president by charging the veterans and using force. He was also advised by his aide Dwight Eisenhower that what he was doing was against orders. His actions were part of the reason why he ended up administering the Phillipines. Marine General Smedley Butler openly supported and visited the veterans as did a number of high ranking military officers and many senior NCOs who had served with the veterans.
