Court-at-law judge switches to Democratic Party

A Bexar County court-at-law judge elected during the “red tide” of 2010 is switching parties.

Standing at the foot of the Bexar County Courthouse steps, County Court-at-Law No. 11 Judge Carlo Key said Monday that he is joining the Democratic Party and will seek re-election as a Democrat in November 2014.

“Make no mistake, I did not leave the Republican Party, it left me,” said Key,flanked by high-ranking Democrats. “My principles have led me to the Democratic Party, and my only hope is that more people of principle will follow me.”

While he's been considering the decision for several weeks,it was the recent federal government shutdown that caused Key to seriously consider switching parties.

Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa said that “in the past few weeks, you've seen the ugly face of the Republican Party that is more interested in taking care of their primary base than in taking care of Americans and Texans.”

The 16-day government shutdown appears to have affected Americans' opinions of the GOP:According to a CNN poll conducted over the weekend, just over half of the public oppose the party's control of the House of Representatives, and more than six in 10 people surveyed think House Speaker John Boehner should lose his job.

Key,38, a native of Marshall, was an attorney before he joined the wave of Republican judges who won seats in 2010, when all but one of the new county judges elected that year were Republicans. Key is a 2002 graduate of the Baylor Law School.

He has pitted himself against the law enforcement community by forbidding testimony that a horizontal gaze nystagmus test—in which an officer uses a pen or finger to track involuntary eye movements—indicates intoxication. This summer, Key learned that he would face a challenger in the Republican primary: Julie Wright,a prosecutor married to a police officer.

This is a 2-way street.

I believe more than a few Democrats would switch to the Republican ticket (one indication is the flood of polls weighted against the GOP polls that - besides scaring wobbly GOP-e elected officials to keep them "establishment" votes - are meant to discourage Red-state Dems from taking that step).

But I think this will change, as Cruz and Co. sentiment continues to sweep the electorate (thanks in large part to Obamacare). We've seen how House Republicans and Senate Republicans voted "No" on Reid's bill (so enough noise has them listening to conservatives and not the designer polls).

And how many saw Mitch McConnell's seat on Bret Baier's show Special Edition - 12 minutes to campaign for re-election in Kentucky's up coming primary? Will McConnell's primary opponent Matt Bevin get 12 minutes with Bret at the opening of his show?

“My principles have led me to the Democratic Party”

Translation: “I have no principles.”

He’s facing a primary challenge.

2014 is going to be a very interesting election.

Conservatives need to get ahead of it.

He lost support and money - the Dems came to fill his pockets.

How many false “Rs” will be weeded out of the party?

Yes, he is switching on principle.

Right after learning he was facing a primary challenge.

Sorry, but your "principles" are showing ....

So he a “bought” judge? If Obama had a judge, he would look just like this guy.

I have a different translation. The GOP establishment finally got to him. Decline To State is not a party so he had nowhere else to go.

When “Judges” have “Parties” they are no longer “Judges” they are partisans.

The Democraps and RINOs get billions from genetically modified organisms in agriculture.

GMObama signed the Monsanto protection act.

If this is made a local issue in your county governments across the country, progressives will be put on the ash heap of history in 2014.

It is a pro-life issue.

There are many, many judges, clerks, etc elected at the county level and the voters know nothing about them.

Most of them are elected because of straight ticket voting. This judge switching from GOP to Dem is probably an indication that the Dems will carry Bexar County

This article/thread from a few days ago laments that there are no republicans on the Dallas County ballot. Which means the dems will carry Dallas County

Where party affiliation is not permitted in judicial elections, just drive by any local union hall and note the yard signs. Tells you who to vote against.......

There is no way a true conservative would ever change to Dem without some kind of brain impairment. Note I said ‘true conservative’.

Here we have yet another low information politician who believes feelings and wishes for his version of a "perfect" society trumps science, biology, economic theory, and natural law!

Democrats believe in global warming caused by you (not the Sun); they believe that men and women are interchangeable; Democrats need not budget, just tax and spend; Democrats use the power of the government to punish their "enemies" (you), especially if you are a WWII or Vietnam veteran.

Democrats need not to read bills to blindly support them before and after passage, like the Affordable Care Act.

Rolling over Christians and killing babies avoids the responsibility of raising children and saves money. Death panels get rid of old people and saves money. Having no budget, just mindless spending is a good strategy for Democrats because they can blame Bush!

By becoming a Democrat his playbook is simplified: name calling and playing the blame game. What a deal!

Satan is proud of Key and the Democrat Party.

The GOP is moving left. Its embracing the Democrat policies thru compromise, not funding Conservative politicians and attacking their Conservative base.
Leaving the GOP is stupid. He’ll fit right in.

True. He's a politician. He needed a financial backer when a primary challenger appeared and his money and supporters dried up. He found money attached to a "D." He'll just mouth their agenda. He's bought and paid for.

There aren't many Ted Cruzs or Mike Lees out there.
