Random Thoughts About Hoplophobia in San Antonio (open carry rally and opponent)

Remember the Alamo (courtesy The Truth About Guns)

At first I thought the Mom from Moms Demand Action was just being a bitch. When I asked her politely if we could talk for a moment she point blank refused. Tersely. Aggressively. She wouldn’t even tell me her name. This after spending twenty-minutes hanging around with an Al-Jezeera reporter at the back of the crowd at the Alamo gun rights rally, and another ten minutes answering questions on camera for a nationwide TV audience. Checking her dilated pupils and remembering her extremely stilted performance in front of the camera, I backed off . . .

When she unknowingly dropped a paper on the ground, I slowly moved forward, picked it up and handed it to her. This minor act of gallantry had the expected but nonetheless welcome effect.

“Can I talk to you as a person?” she asked a few moments later, approaching in a couple of quick steps.

“I’m a person,” I assured her.

“Do you understand why I’m frightened?” she asked, glancing furtively at the crowd of gun-toting Americans assembled in front of the Alamo.

“There’s nothing to be afraid of,” I said. “These are peaceful people.”

“Do you understand?” she repeated, pleadingly.

I understood. She had a phobia.

A phobia is what I call an inappropriate survival response. A great landing at the wrong airport. The right reaction to the wrong stimulus. Think of it this way . . .

If the people gathering for gun rights in the Texas sun had been a pride of hungry lions, Mom’s cold hands, rapid breathing, rapid heartbeat, dilated pupils, aggression and inability to speak or think clearly would have been a normal, natural response;

Excellent article by Robert Farago. I did not know that he had been a professional hypnotist. Many of the people that oppose us are of this type.

My husband has always been a hunter and gun collector. I have had a few friends who were scared at the sight of a gun.

Good analogy about the thinking processes of the gun phobic crowd. I’ve come to the same conclusion about gun control grabbers. They’re extremely afraid of guns because they’ve been demonized by the media and continuously bombarded by anti-gun rhetoric from the government. Its a form of mind control. Taking the gun grabbers to a gun range and teaching them how to use one would probably cure them once they realized that its the idiot wielding the gun that kills people, that target practice can actually be a lot of fun and a gun might be the difference of protecting yourself or getting killed one day.

This identifies the mind numbed masses of the anti-gun nuts; there is another group though. That is the group that wants us all disarmed so that we cannot oppose the government.

An armed man is a citizen, a disarmed man is a subject.

Good read. The author makes a good case for the fearful response to firearms. I have long thought there were three types of people advocating for "gun control."

One, there are power hungry fascists who want control. They've studied enough history and human nature to know they can't have the kinds of control and power they seek while we have the means of effectively resisting them.

Two, there are the ignorant. This is probably the largest group. These are people who for the most part don't think about firearms in any way nor rights in any particular way on any given day of the week. So they only become aware of these issues when something intrudes on their consciousness - usually from the agenda driven MSM. Sadly these types of people don't care enough about most issues to bother seeking their own information. They blindly (and stupidly IMHO) trust the propaganda the MSM feeds them without bothering to apply any critical thinking or do their own research. If they did, they would rapidly realize that virtually every single argument for "gun control" is based on outright lies and distortions-of or cover ups-of the truth.

Finally there are the people this author is talking about. They have been conditioned to fear firearms. It is irrational. Being around a firearm is no different than being around any other piece of gear or machinery. Irrational fear can be powerful. I know first hand. I have an irrational fear of going to the dentist. Intellectually I know it is no big deal. I have never - never had a bad experience with the dentist. He's a great guy, friendly, gentle. He staffs his office with friendly and disarmingly attractive young ladies. It is always a pleasant experience when I'm there - other than my own internal discomfort.

And that is what is truly a sobering thought to me. All three of these groups cause me concern. Freedom and liberty will always have to fight against those in the first group. That's just part of the cost of staying free. I'm proud to be in that fight. The second group is just teeth-grindingly frustrating to deal with because they are so heads-down focused on their own little lives they rarely become engaged in the bigger issues. Thus they are easily manipulated. While the internet and free access to multiple information sources help... You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. They've got to want to educate themselves beyond the sound bite. The third group is also a concern because these fears can be a powerful motivator. They will influence that person in ways big and small. I would do almost anything to not have to go to the dentist. I know it is silly and stupid. I wouldn't want to make public policy based on these fears. And that's the thing - there are others (mostly in the first group, but some ignorant true-believers in the 2nd group too) who will play upon those fears, even try to cause or exacerbate them in people, to gain support for their agenda.

True. Let us ever be more vigilant and not only react but advance into the enemy’s territory to remind him that it will cost him to breech the borders every time he oversteps it.

Example they attempt to make it mandatory for psych tests we attempt to get open carry approved in every state possible, have NRA sponsored target shooting contests for youths, and have NRA courses allowed in colleges and universities. If they get the idea everytime they encroach our position that we will take more of theirs they will slow or top their efforts. Where the Left reall sucker punched us was in the schools by indoctrinating our children the way they wanted them to think. This gave them a whole generation of soldiers to run interference for them and it worked. Online media didn’t help either.

One of my friends actually said “that thing isn’t going to go off, is it?” The gun was laying on the kitchen table at the time. LOL!

In her defense she was born in 1940 and her first memories were of the Nazis coming to her house looking for her father. He was hiding in the woods at the time.

Excellent analysis. I especially like your take on the "heads-down" ignorant class of gun-control supporters. Very frustrating indeed. I've talked with some of these folks. In some cases I don't think they've thought about issues at all, and when they vote, they just go with whatever they think the popular flow happens to be, so they can be easily manipilated, with tragic electoral results, because there are so many of them. We have much work to do.

If you ever see a gun levitate from the table and squeeze of a few rounds, it is a experience that you’ll never forget, I promise.

There were some women in my concealed license class that I am fairly certain were recovering from gunphobia. By the end of the class, they were hitting the target and handling their weapons with cautious ease. I was proud of them.
