BATH, ME -- After embarrassing troubles with its latest class of surface warships, the Navy is hoping for a winner from a new destroyer that's ready to go into the water. So far, construction of the first-in-class Zumwalt, the largest U.S. Navy destroyer ever built, is on time and on budget, something that's a rarity in new defense programs, officials said. And the Navy believes the ship's big gun, stealthy silhouette and advance features will make it a formidable package.

With this thing’s displacement greater than many heavy cruisers, imagine what a modern nuclear battleship would be like? Firing rail guns to accurately nail targets at 115 miles away. Using particle beams to burn anything out of the sky that comes within their range. Probably some equally devastating anti-submarine weaponry.

Would probably not be as expensive as one of the old ones. Wouldn’t need the heavy armor, and not a gazillon tons of ammo. Just pure firepower.

Cruiser Command.. when you can billet an officer to command a Carrier but want them to advance higher than a DDG. You are probably done advancing when you are assigned command of a cruiser.

No need to smuggle Al Qaeda goons. Bammy will fly them in and throw a party at the airport VIP lounge.

If it’s that large, it’s not a destroyer. A true destroyer is known by one name only, “tin can”. Destroyers are called “tin cans” for a reason. “Tin can sailors” are proud of their service on destroyers for a reason.
“A destroyer doesn’t roll, it snaps.”
If it’s longer than 170 ft, it’s something other than a destroyer. For over a century, a destroyer’s mission is to carry torpedoes & protect the fleet from enemy submarines.
What’s not to understand?

If its longer than 170 ft, its something other than a destroyer.Excuse me! I'm a tin can sailor, spending two years aboard the USS Perkins (DD 877), 1966-68. The Perkins was 391 feet long. It was a World War II vintage ship upgraded to Fram 2 configuration with a DASH helicopter aboard.
My ship went through a typhoon in company with the USS Coral Sea, and believe me we were rocking and rolling and rolling and rolling
