The Lincoln high Federalist agenda, which Marx favored, of big and powerful central "indivisible" government, his system of nationally chartered banks, heavy progressive income tax,and public education financed by government, was the real Anti-American agenda of the times. That is why so many Marxists from Europe helped found the Republican Party, helped get Lincoln elected, and became generals in the North's army.
Interesting. I found this at wiki:
The Civil War in the United States is a collection of articles on the American Civil War by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels for the New York Tribune and Die Presse of Vienna between 1861 and 1862, and correspondence between Marx and Engels between 1860 and 1866. It was published as a book in 1937, edited and with an introduction by Richard Enmale. The articles promote the Union side of the war, arguing that the conflict was fundamentally about slavery.
