I'm not so sure about the drive over them part, but your advice is basically very sound. If you find yourself in a mob situation, you must get moving and keep moving.
That's the main reason I ALWAYS keep a car length open in front of me when I stop at red lights. If I gotta pull suddenly, I'll need that space.
