Moscow (AFP) - Russia's prison service on Friday announced it would transfer Pussy Riot punk Nadezhda Tolokonnikova to another penal colony after she went on hunger strike complaining of slave-labour conditions and threats.
Tolokonnikova, 23, is serving a two-year sentence in a penal colony in the Mordovia region of central Russia for the band's protest against President Vladimir Putin in a Moscow church.
On September 23 she began an eight-day hunger strike demanding to be moved to another penal colony. It ended with her being taken to a hospital run by the prison service and placed on a drip.
On Friday the prison service said she had signed a statement that she was once more "refusing to take food" after being moved back to her penal colony.
Hours later, it announced that she would be transferred to another colony.
"Due to a message submitted to the Russian Prison Service by Nadezhda Tolokonnikova about ensuring her personal safety, the leadership of the service has decided to transfer her from Penal Colony No. 14 in Mordovia to another penitential institution," it said.
As is standard practice, relatives will only be informed of her new location within 10 days, it said. It was not immediately clear if she was carrying on with the new hunger strike.
Tolokonnikova's husband Pyotr Verzilov told AFP he believed the prison service took the decision under pressure.
"It's the result of pressure from the public and the authorities, and especially the harsh comment from (Kremlin rights ombudsman Vladimir) Lukin this morning," he said.
Lukin told Moscow Echo radio station that the prison service had "deceived" him after promising to consider transferring Tolokonnikova if she halted her hunger strike.
Tolokonnikova last month released a letter detailing how inmates were treated like "slaves" and worked

Totalitarianism fanboys...ha. Perfect.
So all those veterans who moved barricades during the shutdown should be serving two-year sentences in labor camps?
She has crazy eyes!
for what?
They were on public property, I didnt see them doing anything destructive.
Yeah. This is the kind of woman you can share a bed with, but you should NEVER allow yourself to fall asleep.
Greenpeace idiots found out the HARD way, Russians don’t eff around.
Do the crime, do the time.
I don’t know first hand, but I’m told Russian prisons make Japanese prisons look like kiddygarten.
And Japanese prisons are an exorcise in severe discipline.
But what do I know? Ain’t never been in one.
I don’t like Putin and the way he rules Russia. I don’t like the way the Orthodox Church is acting as his bully boys. So yes, in fact, I *am* rooting for her.
You guys certainly need to learn more about this group. They are commies of the worst Bolshevik kind who deserve much longer sentences. They did numerous stunts like that and earlier, coincidentally aimed against a church and law-enforcement. An idea to ridicule priests and cops isn’t quite novel. It is an old commie way to demoralize society trashing moral and legal authority within.
The good news is, you don’t have to live in Russia.
There is a disturbing amount of communist and anarchist fanboys on FR these days...
Lol!
I have to agree!
>>I dont like Putin and the way he rules Russia. I dont like the way the Orthodox Church is acting as his bully boys. So yes, in fact, I *am* rooting for her.<<
Well, if you are speaking like communist, supports a communist cause and root for a communist...Aren’t you a communist?
Hey, Lurking!
I completely understand your point. OTH, you are comparing apples and oranges.
Russia does NOT have a Constitution like ours. And yes, some of their laws we would consider draconian. But, they are THEIR laws, not ours.
When in Rome, you’d better comply like hell with Roman laws. My “rights” in this country, do NOT translate into anything compatible with laws in THEIR country.
Been all over the world, was extremely sensitive to the host’s rules. Kept me out of a LOT of trouble.
Cunning,
I hate communists probably as much as you.
Maybe more, but I don’t know you, or your history, so that’s just my opinion. You may have a really deep seated reason to hate them as much as I do.
LOL, have a good weekend!
1) You don’t have to be a communist to not like Putin.
2) You don’t have to be a communist to not like the behavior of the Orthodox Church.
3) If I root for a football player, does that make me a football player?
I watched a documentary about Russian prisons a couple years back. They are harsh, and the discipline is severe. Prisoners learn very quickly to toe the line.
In Barky's America making an anti-muslim video gets you made the Benghazi scapegoat and thrown in prison.
Vlad,
You know your commie methodology well. Communists attacked morality first.
"Free Love," "Queer Rights," etc., etc. Communists never lied about what they wanted. They told you to your face.
So many fools thought it was a joke.
We should pay them a preset fee to take our worst animals.
