I understand your point, but, historically, it has been very rare for any presidential candidate to get more than 60% of the European white vote.

Reagan got over 60% of the White vote in 1984 and also perhaps in 1980. Nixon did even better in 1972.

Bush II came close in 1984, as did Johnson in 1964. I'd suppose that Roosevelt, Eisenhower, and Harding all came close, but may not have made it.

I'd double check all that, though, as I didn't find an authoritative site.

Barring a major blowout or landslide it's hard to rack up those numbers.

It's probably not a good idea to put all one's eggs into that one basket.

Yes, I goofed.

Before 1968, the electorate was essentially all white, so I was just thinking who got 60% of the total vote, which is a small number of presidents.

GHW Bush got 60% of the white vote in 1988.

GW Bush did not hit 60% in either 2000 or 2004.

Reagan got 66% in 1984.

Here’s the link to 1988:

Roper gives you good detail on all the presidential elections from 1976-2012.

Their data comes from the “National Election Pool,” which is what all the networks use on election night.

Navigating is a little tricky.

If you want to change the election year, you need to click “Presidential Elections” at top left or top center, which takes you to a new page.

Then you click on the year.

That takes to another page.

Then you need to click on “(Year) Group Voting,” which is at center right.

I’ve searched for a faster way, but can’t find one.
