Thanks MG - that’s exactly the kind of experienced info I was seeking. Looks like I’ll go for the AR clone. At least for that’s the one I’ll get first.
bump for later
BTW, love old Hickok45. He does great work.
Mini-14 has 2700-2900fps speeds with 55grn bullet. It relies on speed for kill power. Shoots much flatter than the 30. .308 beats all of them. I have a M1A for that duty. I'm not sure what it's worth in today's dollars, but It was half the new Ruger price when I bought. Ruger looks cool, but I don't think I'll be investing in cool until the price is around $1500. A new president and some competition and the price will go down like after Clinton.
Go to a nice sized gun store and handle the minis and various versions of the AR. Talk to knowledgeable sales people and have them answer your questions fbefore you make a decision.
If you’ve never served in the military, have little firearms training, the mini is pretty simple. On the other hand, few that shoot hard and hunt hard use the mini. ARs are everywhere now for a lot of good reasons.
I have both AR and FAL. The FAL is a good gun, but the AR has better ergonomics and better trigger and better accuracy most of the time out of the box...not to say you can’t tweak the FAL.
In addition, you have to agree, that the AR system is Barbie for Men. So many additions...
Enjoy whatever you shoot...just shoot. :)
Eveyone: How is the ammo situation where you are?
Here in Colorado Springs you can buy rifles and handguns, but ammo, FORETABOUTTTITTT!
Have you tried DSAs FAL scope mount/dust cover? It made all the difference.

so anyway, we were road hunting and came off our summit and he yells bear, jumps out with my 308 Scar, bear is movin out like fire up the mountain,250-300 yards, he shoots, and I yell you got 15 A-FRames & TTSXs in there keep shootin. He hit the bear 3rd or 4th shot , bear faltered then dropped within 30 yards. Made his day, just look at the grin on his face, says it all. Our interior grizz average 400 lbs, not the food here there is near the coast, but they can kill ya just as quick. Anyday you kill one of the those moose eatin machines, it's a very good day; we have too many bear where I call home. We live where the Yukon comes in from Canada.
The SCar is a good gun. I like the new style pistons, you can shoot 100's of rounds between cleaning, unlike old style pistons. Scar is very light, nice to shoot on the fly from snowmachine or ATV.
Anyway, hope you enjoy the grizz pict.
Rooster, I have a few Acog red dot/ghost ring scopes, luv them too. I have a 4X32 & a couple 3.5X35s and I can hit caribou out to 500 yards with those Acogs, no problems; just need a little practice when you first get the scope. I have Leupold & Vortex and have used an Elcan (the expensive model)and I still like the Acogs best; probably just accustomed to them Acogs and believe I can hit what I’m shooting at with my eyes closed with the acogs. They are super quick target acquisition scopes. I’m a shooter, not an aimer; the Acogs are my kind of scope.
The SOCOM always struck me as a gimmick that would likely be innacurate as hell. Has anyone had any experience with the SuperMatch? I know it’s a beast, weight-wise.
250-300 yds is a lot of ground. What kind of scope was he using.
Rossi Rossi Matched Pair Pistol A single handgun for a wide range of uses Shoots .45 LC, .22 LR and .410-bore ammunition Comes with two matched barrels Adjustable rear and fiber-optic front sights
That looks sweet, but I bet it doesn’t come in 16 Gauge. LOL
