Polls in today's U.S. Senate special election put Republican Steve Lonegan somewhere between 10 and 14 points behind Democrat Cory Booker as voters head out to cast their ballots.
Booker, though his campaign has not been without its foibles, has succeeded in creating an air of inevitability surrounding the race and it remains to be seen if he can stay out in front of a hard charging Lonegan.
Down by double digits with only hours to go before the polls close, here's what needs to happen for Lonegan to walk away with victory.

Clearly, a great many Americans love their communists.
Uh... sorry... I meant to say, “...love their Democrats.”
Never mind; it’s the same thing.
besides a miracle
Turnout in Newark will be fine, dead or alive, citizen or non-citizen.
The only way Lonegan wins is if fires break out across Newark in all the warehouses containing pre-recorded votes for Booker
Let’s wait and see. Wednesday is not a normal election day and Booker hasn’t been spending a lot of money on this race. I figure he thinks he has it in the bag which it very well may be.
That is an idea! lol The unfortunate thing is these kind of off year special election races should be great wins for GOP. We know turnout is going to be down especially in Democrat strongholds so its a matter of investing in getting people to the polls. Lonegan appears to have invested heavily in that. Lets hope it pays off.
another lib outlet telling you what Lonegan needs......
Lonegan has no chance at all. This is New Jersey we are talking about here. Though completely unaccomplished, Booker is a media celebrity and will win easily.
The Obamaphones have no doubt been ringing off the hook today.
I was just reading a story that said as much. If so the GOP are just lazy bastards but then again they voted for Chris Cristie who is all about him winning.
If he loses by single digits that would be a great accomplishment considering the NJ electorate.
I like Lonegan but he has a snow ball’s chance of survival in the Texas Summer.
Early reports say turnout in republican districts is light with turnout in dem districts steady. Don’t get your hopes up. It’s going to be Booker in a cakewalk.
It might be possible to miraculously close a 2 point gap, but not a 12 point gap.
None of which will happen.
Its been done before in NJ. We are going to see soon.
We will see soon.
Polls close at 8 PM so we’ll begin to hear reports before long. If the voting has been
sparse then the results should be known early. Voting by mail could be a mixer if
the numbers are sufficient.
Only a democrat can close a 12 point gap.
