Fair enough. For the record, there is no family I can rely on to aid me, none at all. So that, unfortunately, is out. A couple things:

1. What is wrong with Virginia, btw? I know it is not great but I thought at least it is not as awful as New York, Mass or California. Am I missing something?

2. How would I know, if I did end up South, in say, Tennessee, Georgia, Texas, Alabama, Northern Florida, North Carolina or other such state, how would I know who is reliable? Would there be any ways to tell?

The reason I would stay away from Virginia is the proximity to DC. We all know Obama has purged a lot of the military and replaced the leadership with his queer puppets. If it comes to martial law, and most of the military goes along, Virginia would be one of the first states they’d lock down. No exit.

On your second question, we’re going into SHTF territory where I do not claim to be any sort of guru. My advice is be very suspicious of everybody, unless its someone you know well. When a society collapses, people change. Many become animals, and the libtards become lower than animals.
Travel armed. That’s the first thing. Know how to use a weapon and never let it out of your sight.

This will not happen within a matter of hours. In a default/debt crisis/meltdown scenario, the fastest it would occur would be a couple of weeks.
With that time frame in mind, I think we on FreeRepublic could perhaps organize our own SHTF-Plan, as a group. I’ll assume many share your situation, and want some security in case the worm starts to turn, but are not die-hard preppers with bunkers etc.

And bear in mind, I am making some assumptions (in the case of a default) that I maybe shouldn’t make.
I’m assuming the loss of control would be quick, and would gather momentum with time, unlike the ongoing Greek crisis that has been so slow that years have dragged on. The difference I’m calculating is that Greece had a far smaller population, was far more isolated economically from the world, not hugely balkanized with urban sprawls of thugs, and the government was very much more in control (or rather the EU was) than our government, which can’t even successfully close a memorial. If they seized people’s assets here, the country is not so brain dead they’d accept it.
Perhaps I am wrong. Perhaps it would be slow and painful. Perhaps Obama would seize the bank accounts before things really spiraled out of control.

I just don’t know how this story ends.
