This is indeed ghoulish and petty and based, in the best case scenario, on spite.
But, “sacred ground” is a bit over the top.
I hate how the word “sacred” is placed on places having nothing to do with God. It happens all the time now, including by alleged language-savvy media reporters.
The proper word for such places is “hallowed”.
