Shutdown ruins American Indian protest at Alcatraz

The federal government shutdown claimed another casualty Monday - the annual American Indian ceremony on Alcatraz in protest of Columbus Day.

Indian activists and their supporters could not take the morning ferry to Alcatraz, as they've done since the mid-1980s, for prayers, songs, dancing and speeches because the island - part of the National Park Service - is closed.

Instead, they gathered at Pier 33, from where they usually depart, and marched to Washington Square Park in North Beach, heart of the city's Italian heritage and Columbus Day festivities, then headed for Coit Tower to protest by the Christopher Columbus statue.

"Some of us were angry we couldn't go to Alcatraz. We consider that a sacred site where we have a right to gather," said Antonio Gonzales of Aim West, an Indian group that organizes the annual pilgrimages on Columbus Day and Thanksgiving. "The Indian community is hard hit by the federal government again."

Why did they not charter a boat to Alcatraz? They could have moved the barry-cades that way.

Give me a break. Alcatraz island is NOT some holy "Native American nature preserve".

It's a friggin' ROCK. It only holds "significance" for a bunch of hippies protesting in the '60s.

It’s going to be touch and go for the Republic to survive this.

So they all went down to Pier 33 and drank a case of beer?

The folks at Little Big Horn wouldn’t have let a little thing like a gubmint shutdown interfere with their days work. In fact, they would have capitalized on it.
