Sen. Ted Cruz met with roughly 15 to 20 House Republicans for roughly two hours late Monday night at the Capitol Hill watering hole Tortilla Coast.
The group appeared to be talking strategy about how they should respond to a tentative Senate deal to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling without addressing Obamacare in a substantive way, according to sources who witnessed the gathering. The Texas Republican senator and many of House Republicans in attendance had insisted on including amendments aimed at dismantling Obamacare in the continuing resolution that was intended to avert the current shutdown.
Sources said the House Republicans meeting in the basement of Tortilla Coast with Cruz were some of the most conservative in the House: Reps. Louie Gohmert of Texas, Steve King of Iowa, Jim Jordan of Ohio, Tom Cotton of Arkansas, Raúl Labrador of Idaho, Steve Southerland of Florida, Mark Meadows of North Carolina, and Justin Amash of Michigan.
The group is a collection of members who have often given leadership headaches in recent years by opposing both compromise measures as well as packages crafted by fellow Republicans. And, it seems, leadership unwittingly became aware of the meetup.
While the dinner meeting was held in a private basement room, the group was spotted by Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., who was dining with some other members, including Gregg Harper, R-Miss. McCarthy is a regular at the Capitol Hill watering hole, and a source said he seemed particularly interested in what the group was up to.

A “secret” meeting at Tortilla Coast?!?!?
The place is literally a block away from the Cannon House Office Building, caddy-corner to the Capitol South Metro Station and across the Street from the RNC (plus around the corner from the DNC).
It’s ALWAYS packed in the evenings with Congressional staff.
I can’t think of a more conspicuous place to have a get together, if one is actively trying to get noticed.
Correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t Roll Call supposed to be somewhat center right? Doesn’t Fred Barnes work for them?
The comments are the the talk of insane maniacs.
No kidding...they are saying the same things about Cruz that 'birthers' say about Zero. Hysterical, indeed.
Send out an evite.
You and everybody you know are cordially invited to a secret meeting at Smith & Wollensky on 49th and 3rd. Tell your friends it’s a secret.
Don’t tell Kevin McCarthy. He’s banned anyway. He pissed all over the bar in the grill, the last time Notre Dame lost.
If you're going to have a secret meeting then why are you holding it at one of the restaurants closest to the Capitol and one which all your fellow Senators and Congressmen go to?
Fred Barnes is the Executive Editor for the Weekly Standard.
Roll Call bills themselves as nonpartisan (and you know what that usually means).
Big difference between a PRIVATE meeting and secret meeting.
When 20 congress critters meet in a public bar, have dinner and drinks in a separate room it is a PRIVATE MEETING.
When 20 congress critters, meet in a private home, and NO ONE ELSE knows about it, it is a SECRET MEETING.
Yeah. That’s right. He used to do that show with Mort Kondrake. Mort always struck me as a reasonable left of center guy. They used to exist I guess. Mort worked for Roll Call.
I’m getting tired of never seeing my own rep mentioned, and wondering where he is.
I had a hunch not to trust Kevin McCarthy.
This article is proof why.
Kevin McCarthy was the congress critter who tried to bully the radio station in his district into dropping Mark Levin’s show.
McCarty and one of Mississippi’s Congressmen, Gregg Harper, don’t want to be confused with the Conservatives and want Boehner to know they weren’t part of the Conservative group. McCarty and Harper were proubly discussing how to appear to be Conservative enough to get re-elected.
Yeah, I sure would like to know where Alan Nunnelee Ms-01 is in all this. I called his DC office last week and told them what I wanted him to do but something happened to the connection? and the volume dropped so low I couldn’t hear the reply.
cool name for restaurant
