Excellent point, but I also think that money you donate to charities only for income tax purposes are not really charities.

If you’re willing to actually part with $100 for a particular charity, and your tax rate is 20%, then write the check for $125, you get a $25 break on your income tax, and you’ve made a net $100 donation.
