Obama rules out short-term debt ceiling hike

President Obama signaled Saturday that he wouldn't accept the Republicans' offer for a short-term increase in the nation's debt limit.

"It wouldn’t be wise, as some suggest, to just kick the debt ceiling can down the road for a couple months, and flirt with a first-ever intentional default right in the middle of the holiday shopping season," Obama said in his weekly address.

"Because damage to America’s sterling credit rating wouldn’t just cause global markets to go haywire; it would become more expensive for everyone in America to borrow money. Students paying for college. Newlyweds buying a home," he said.

House Republicans have offered a six-week increase in the debt limit. If adopted, the plan will buy time for broader negotiations over entitlement spending and taxes, they say.

Obama claimed that the damage to interest rates from failing to pass a long-term debt ceiling hike would create a "Republican default tax" on families and businesses.

"Manufacturing crises to extract massive concessions isn’t how our democracy works, and we have to stop it," Obama said. "Politics is a battle of ideas, but you advance those ideas through elections and legislation – not extortion."

The United States will hit the debt ceiling and begin defaulting on its bills on Thursday, according to the Treasury Department.

Uh-oh. We better get back into the huddle and give Obama even more of what he wants...

And he ruled out signing the death benefit bill.

Oh no, it’s an “Obama Red Line”!

He’s obviously still convinced he can do whatever he wants and the Republicans will get blamed for whatever happens.

The feckless and fractured GOP only encourages Obama to demand more and give less. The idiots in the party will never understand that their is strength in unity. They could beat Obama if they hold the line. His approval rating has dropped into the political danger zone and he’s the one who needs a deal.

Having legions of your people in the media gives one a lot of confidence. No fear of criticism. Only fawning support for Team Obama and viscious attacks on Republicans.

Obama owns the media.

Screw him, pass your bill and go home. Pass a temporary CR too. Let the Democrats stew all of the holiday season. By the end of January Ocare will be more of a Democrat liability.

OK. No surprise here. Obama avoids the GOP trap that was laid on his doorstep.

Here are the next steps:

1. Pass a one year (or whatever) extension to the debt ceiling with a few goodies attached. Big cuts in spending. Defund totally the EPA. Things like that.

2. Do nothing further on the Government Shutdown.

3. Wait.

No kidding, huh?

The way to do it, and to score a PR victory, is to talk in public about wanting negotiations, and then, privately, come to the verge of an agreement, and then back away.

Repeat as necessary.

I thought the short-term debt ceiling limit idea was his, just this week.

That’s why this shutdown was stupid in the first place. Obama owns the media and it’s going to beat the GOP like a tented mule

If Republicans give him a year on this debt ceiling, they're crazy or stupid, or both.

What the hell. Why don't they just give him til after the election. That'll show him!

The U.S. government hasn’t had a budget since Obumbles took office, so why is he concerned about one now?

"The feckless and fractured GOP only encourages Obama to demand more and give less. The idiots in the party will never understand that their is strength in unity."

Yep.

The negotiations taking place now remind me a lot of all the boneheaded compromises the GOP made with Obama since it took back the House.

We were told repeatedly that the Tea Party was crazy, and that we ABSOLUTELY HAD to cut to deals with him... or else we would lose in the presidential race in 2012 and fail to take back the Senate! So, the GOP compromised with Obama... and we lost the presidential race and failed to win back the Senate.

Obama needs walking around money, plus he has that 100 million dollar, 3 week, taxpayer funded, Hawaiian vacation for friends and family coming up..
Make any deal contingent on grounding the VC fleet..

Then why did his approval rating crash down to 37%?...

********
All the Rovian political calculations don’t seem to produce big wins. Just lots of compromises that make Republicans look even weaker.

Time to stand on principle instead of machinations to achieve some perceived political “advantage”.

The RINO plan:
Capitulate, give in, throw in the towel, concede, get along, roll over, don't fight, play nice, give ‘em what they want, fold, cry, hide and say, you win.

And still they wonder why they lose.
