During the first six months of 2013, 100 percent of the people bitten by dogs in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Canine Services were black or Latino.
That's 100 percent. As in every single one.
The data comes from a report by the Police Assessment Resource Center, a nonprofit organization that aims to "strengthen police oversight so as to advance effective, respectful and publicly accountable policing."
Clearly, these people have job security -- they have their work cut out for them in Los Angeles.
According to PARC's records, the number of Latinos bitten by LASD dogs increased 30 percent from 30 bites in 2004 to 39 in 2012. The number of blacks bitten increased 33 percent for the same time period, from 9 to 12. And when it came to the beginning of 2013, white people didn't have to worry about police-initiated animal attacks at all.
It's no secret that L.A.'s law-enforcement officers have historically struggled with racial profiling (that's putting it as mildly as calling Rodney King's infamous brutal beating an "incident"). And just this year, the New York City Police Department was forced to revamp its stop-and-frisk policy thanks in part to data on the shockingly disproportionate number of times that black and Latino men were apprehended by officers.
But seriously -- are man's best friends now profiling perpetrators, too?
Not likely (although there is actually a case to be made that doggie racism is a real thing). Given the context, our best guess is that this is simply more bad news about humans dealing with the whole "a person's race isn't a good reason to decide they're dangerous" thing, which seems to be becoming more difficult to grasp all the time.
Just like judgment calls about who's "suspicious," and determinations about when to pull out handcuffs,

Had a lab/chow shelter dog that would have no part of anyone of color.
be it strange non-white delivery men or a black friend of mine who was frequently at my house.
She wanted their throats
Maybe the White guys are just smart enough to give up BEFORE the dogs are released. I’m not sure but it’s something to think about. maybe if the police used pit bulls they would never have to turn them loose on a suspect.
To be fair, we now have a basset named Booker who was also a rescued dog. He was kept chained full time in the back yard by his owners, who were white, and when they moved out of town they dropped him off at the vet and abandoned him.
Booker was also traumatized, and didn’t know how to socialize with people. In the early days, he bit a couple of our grandchildren who got too close into his space. Gradually we brought him around, but he still is very sensitive about anyone coming into his space when he’s sleeping. No more biting, at least, just growling. But he loves going for walks and being petted, and he gets on well with our other dogs. Not a racist, at least.
Next door neighbor raised a Dobi from when she was a young pup.
With no know negative encounters, that dog would go nuts when Asians walked by. (which was only occasionally)
But it was consistent and focused only at Asians.
Predominantly white neighborhood, some Hispanics.
Probably some kind of traumatic experience as a puppy, I would guess.
All our dogs have a thing against UPS trucks, although they just run out and bark at them. Our local UPS guy carries dog biscuits with him, and tosses them biscuits when he leaves a package on the porch. They growl and bark at the truck, but they love the biscuits.
I guess the only crooks were black or Latino.
Do a google search on police K-9 training images. You won’t find any pictures of them training against people of color. All the people in the bite suits are white.
In related news, records indicate that the L.A. Sheriff Department’s Fire Hoses were only used on Blacks.
Speaking at an unscheduled News Conference, Sheriff Commander Bull Conner III disclosed the statistics to a salivating Media.
I thought Dogs were color blind. If the Sheriff used Attack Cats, they might have a point.
Digs are colorblind!
So what are they talking about for the first months of 2013, one dozen, or two dozen people? How many Asians get bit?
Dogs, not digs, may be colorblind, My Father is a retired veterinarian and that is the rule.
Whatever, don’t tell me Dogs don’t pick up on ethnicity. I have black friends who have to restrain their dogs when I come to visit; our little 8 pound rat-terrier goes nuts when they visit here, and I lock her in a room. Certainly didn’t train Doggie to be racist, seems to come with the territory.
My cousins small dog has a similar history with same out come.
The idiot boxer mix I have now jumps in their truck and wants to go for a ride.
Had the same issue with the Census takers and the cop that came out when joggers claimed he was a vicious dog threatening them.
Makes perfect sense if the dog only works in the crime infested parts of the city.
True.
So my phone horriblated text was somewhat plausible.
Apologies to my phone.
HA!
“And when it came to the beginning of 2013, white people didn’t have to worry about police-initiated animal attacks at all.”
What White People?
There aren’t any left in LA, they’ve all be taxed out of existence.
