I’m thinking there may be an unintended benefit in this disaster. If enough doctors fire their insurance staff and go cash then for the first time since WWII we’ll have actual competition and price pressure.
It will be cheaper to pay cash instead of getting “insurance” and the service will be better. (I was one of those “the glass is half full” types. Then I realized the glass had been over-sized for the job.)
You are right in your equation as it stands. Now add in hospitalization.
