Go back even further to Woody Wilson and Teddy Roosevelt who were the forerunners of un-constitutional governing. Even Ol' Honest Abe Lincoln had his moment with the suspension of Habeus Corpus. These attacks on fundamental liberties are not new. They are just accelerating.
