Jeff Jones started shopping for health insurance as soon as the Obamacare insurance marketplaces opened on October 1.
The Kentucky resident is like a lot LGBT citizens who have not had access to affordable health insurance in the past. If Jones, 47, had been able to legally marry, he would have immediately been eligible for coverage under his partner, Nathan Walkers, policy. Walker has domestic partnership benefits at work, but the couple havent lived together long enough to qualify for them.
Im a diabetic, so I do want to make sure Im covered, Jones said.
As a whole the LGBT community has less experience with insurance than the general population. A survey done by Out2Enroll, a group that focuses on helping the LGBT community with health issues, found that about a third of respondents were uninsured. Its estimated some 16.3% of the general population is uninsured.
In honor of National Coming Out Day on Friday, Out2Enrolls Be Out. Be Healthy. Get Covered campaign has launched a new LGBT-friendly website with advice about how to navigate the insurance marketplace.

Obama says: ‘Eat feces! It’s good for you!’
Out2Enroll?
Out all day and out all night I’d bet...
out for weeks and weeks most likely
Wait until the HIV positive community is given morphine and a cot instead of more life prolonging therapies. Those courses of treatment do not fit into the cost/benefit matrix the government wants.
when is obama coming out?
This was one of the goals of ObamaCare, to have homosexuals with their astronomical health costs covered by the taxpayers. Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco district will have 100% participation, no doubt.
A big kettle of queers dripping with AIDS and STD’s added to government healthcare will cause no burden on the system./sarc
Who else would sign up for 0bamacare? It makes good economic sense for somebody with AIDS to enroll to enroll in it.
I’m glad they are coming out to register. It will be good to have a national register of homosexuals. It will make it easier in the future.
You've got to be kidding. Homos will get whatever meds they need even if the government has to kill children to do it.
You all can see where this is going...right? THe sick (necessarily homosexuals) soak up the $$$. Since they’re a govt protected group they get preference. That means you dont. Nice huh...but you still have to pay the ever increasing premiums for them.
And as an active homosexual, he is almost guaranteed to have some chronic health or mental issue to deal with, which is related to “the lifestyle.”
Our whole country, the country our forefathers created and our fathers and sons fought to protect, has become one sick joke....
I never imagined this country could fall so far, so fast............
A totalitarian government that has a list of every single homosexual is a very dangerous place to be gay. Ask any Cuban homosexual, or any one in an islamist country.
That is the sum total of who has signed up, freeloaders that pay nothing for medicaid and really sick people.
This insane program will add trillions a year to our debt!
Imagine if it was smokers and what the headline would be.
“Democrats call on Obama to exclude smokers, increase penalty for not joining.”
Like supporting like
Not if the homosexual community is a reliable voting block. Without risk of losing them to alternative political groups they serve no purpose and the level of commitment to them is all mouth and no fist. (no pun intended)
The people who have the most need for medical care will rush to be the first to enroll.
It’s like finding your barn is burning and calling the insurance company to cover it. Can it be done?
Sure, if the insurance company can charge other policyholders enough to pay for all the burning barns that will need to be covered.
In effect, we, the taxpayers, are going to be subsidizing these burning barns. And it will be sold to the public as something that a caring nation should do. (Not that we don’t already furnish public health care through local governments and charity from hospitals and doctors)
The problem will arise when you don’t get enough taxpayers without burning barns in the program to spread the cost around.
