Preston police chief touts acquisition of armored vehicle for department
idaho state journal ^ | 9/27/2013 | Chief Ken Geddes

PRESTON — The Preston Police Department acquired a Mine Resistance Ambush Protected Personnel Carrier (MRAP) from the United States Army within the past week. The military has chosen to make equipment available to law enforcement agencies to increase domestic security in our country.

MRAP’s are armored fighting vehicles are designed for the purpose of surviving attacks and ambushes, including mines explosions.

Preston Police department applied for the vehicle in early spring of this year. The Preston City Council considered the proposal and possible benefits to our city and the surrounding communities and approved the acquisition. The vehicle comes at no cost to Preston City. It is a 2007 model with very low mileage.

“What are we going to do with that?” is a lot of people’s first comment. Others might say, “Are things that bad in Preston that we need that?” I hope not, too. It is not manufactured with our needs in mind, but I am so grateful to have it to protect our officers and people in our area. The military is dispersing equipment while it is still functional rather than putting it in mothballs and never to be used again.

Preparing for and increasing our capabilities doesn’t make bad things happen.

The taxpayers already paid for the vehicle. We did not have to buy it again. Times have changed. Too many communities have had to say, “I didn’t think that would happen here.”

This MRAP will be made available, too, for use not only here in Preston, but in neighboring counties, as well as the Logan and Cache county area. It will be an asset to the regional SWAT teams that serves our community.

In any situation where there is a threat of gun violence this vehicle may be used. Our department has officers that have been trained and have personally used these armored vehicles in real world operations overseas. They feel this vehicle will be an asset in our area just as it was in combat situations.

We are very thankful for this added resource this MRAP brings. It increases officer and public’s safety as we arrive at a high threat incident. Officers will still have to get out of the vehicle into danger to manage the threat. The vehicle is expected to be used as a response vehicle for special teams. It can be used for rescue and evacuation of public from threatening environments. I appreciate our government and our military for the security they give us and for their help to increase our strength here in our schools and at home.

Has 0bama stated his final solution to the gun owner problem yet?

I believe that he has plainly communicated his solution to the gun owner problem. I also believe that the gun owners are in denial as to what Obama's solution entails. They revert to the 1030s German Jew's response when they had the opportunity to respond: To Wit} 1. They won't do that. 2. That is just politics, Hitler won't do that. 3.They will never do that.

The only reason Obama has not implemented his solution is that he does not have his assets to do so in the correct places as of yet. However, he is working on that 24/7 and is making positive progress. If you don't believe that, listen to the news. The Park Service is but one example. The military is another. He is quietly, or not so quietly, using any excuse, contrived or real, to replace those whose loyalties he is unsure of with those whom he is sure. Once his assets are in place, he will , without warning, strike.

“Yeah, when your goons roll into my turf, we’re using this on you.”

They don't worry about MRAPs being used against them.

The problem is, one side will have drones with JDAMs and Hellfire missiles, and the other side won't, and a JDAM or Hellfire will take out an MRAP with one shot.

If we’re not breaking any laws, what have we to fear?

Just a couple of weeks ago, I heard the three-star general director of the DIA say exactly that.

“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin’s thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn’t love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.”

Nobody is talking about the O & M budgetary impact of owning such a limited production vehicle. Everything might work on it today, but the only use it will get will be training exercises and even then parts will eventually need replacing. When it needs an engine or tranny overhaul, it will cost more than one FTE officer position. But that is a future hit and maybe not even on the watch of the present Chief.

Good point. MRAPS are designed to be used against lightly armed civilian forces (ie. us) They wouldn't last ten minutes on a modern battlefield with TOWs, LOSATS, dragons, Javelins, etc. BUT WE DON'T HAVE ANY OF THESE BY DELIBERATE GOVERNMENT INTENT TO NULLIFY THE REAL PURPOSE OF THE SECOND AMENDMENT.

Hmm, didn’t know IEDs were a big problem in Preston, ID (population 5,204).

Preston is the home of Napoleon DYNAMITE.

I don't think we can count on that to prevent their use. They'll last quite a while, and when they're no longer operational, then the local KGB will just get the next latest hand me downs from the military.

Then again, MRAPS are designed for Third World areas. I don’t care how heavily armored it may be, a head-on collision with a cement mixer would not be survivable by anybody inside it.

I didn’t know he was a white supremicist!

I will have to watch the movie sometime—right after I finish up this batch of acetone peroxide I am mixing up to clean the sinks in my compound. Trinitrotoluene is so 1860s...

“Gestapo rules of engagement. And the MSM will call them heroes. Just like the Boston Marathon atrocities.”

Don’t forget the recent police shooting of the young woman in D.C. that was cheered by the legislators. Downright scary.

There is a major weakness to armored vehicles that is not very obvious. It is also relatively inexpensive, non-technical, and requires extensive “3-shop” repairs to the vehicle, if it doesn’t ruin the vehicle outright. It needs no maintenance or personnel in the area to activate.

It is a “tiger trap”, a wide and deep hole in the ground, hopefully with water in it, concealed with a tarp with dirt and plants on top of it.

When the armored vehicle hits one, even if it is not a direct hit, it tumbles into the pit, often “jelly side down”, and is just a nightmare to extricate. It can often even kill the crew within.

The hard part is locating it where an armored vehicle is likely to cross. This can be done by setting up obstacles, to channelize the armored vehicle to the trap.

The way to defeat a tiger trap is the military rule to never send in armor unaccompanied by infantry, and visa versa. But police are usually unfamiliar with this rule, so send in armored vehicles by themselves.
