Cruz promises Republican victory in shutdown fight

Richmond, Virginia (CNN) - Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, blamed by Democrats and some of his fellow Republicans as a chief architect of the ongoing government shutdown, struck back on Saturday, faulting President Obama and Senate Democrats for the political stalemate.

“Let me be very clear, I don’t think we should be in a shutdown,” Cruz said in a speech to conservatives in the Virginia state capital. “Throughout the course of it, I have said we should not shut down the government. But sadly this is Harry Reid’s and President Obama's shutdown.”

. . .

In the run-up to the shutdown, Cruz - whose profile has risen considerably among conservatives since taking office this year - had lobbied Republicans in the House and Senate not to relent, even as the president was promising not to sign any bill that would alter "Obamacare."

Cruz reminded the audience that House Republicans have passed multiple “narrowly targeted continuing resolutions” to fund parts of the government as negotiations continue, but he criticized Democrats for refusing to pass them.

He said Senate Democrats are “dug in.”

“We are in the midst of a battle,” Cruz said. “Their position is untenable right now.”

. . .

“How do we win?” he asked. “If you trust the media, if you trust the voices in Washington, if you even trust, god forbid, some of the elected Republicans in Washington, they say we can’t win this fight. The only way to win this fight is the way we won every other fight throughout the history of the republic, which is solutions don’t come from Washington, D.C., they come from the people.”

“Career politicians in both parties have gotten us into this mess,” he said. “But it’s going to be the American people who get us out.”

I like what Cruz says, and I admire his courage, but here’s the problem:

“Career politicians in both parties have gotten us into this mess,” he said. “But it’s going to be the American people who get us out.”

Fine, ok Senator - other than mouthing platitudes, what exactly do you or “we” need to do? Thus far, we sit and watch but little changes.

Enough platitudes. What is the plan?

There already has been a victory of sorts.

We heard from the establishment, “Obamacare is the law of the land, Romney lost, we didn’t retake the senate, there’s nothing we can do. Oh, well. That was a fun fight. Let’s get back to business as usual and let the government grow and continue to enslave the people. Time for lunch!” The basic, aw shucks attitude.

But thanks to Cruz and Lee, Obamacare is not quietly being implemented. It has been brought once again out in the open, and is a disaster for all to see. And it is an enormous millstone around the democrats necks and the moderates that assist them.

The people are watching. And bright sunshine has been shed on the charades.

I don't hear a promise of victory in those quotes by Cruz. Maybe it was in the linked article. It seems to me he is saying with the people's support, we can win. That is true, and it is also true that with the GOPe working hard to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, the effort could result in disaster. To cave would so dispirit conservatives that they will not show up in 2014 and the House will go to the Democrats. Then, the GOPe braintrust will blame Cruz.

Fight, and fight, and fight, against the implementation of Obamacare, take it to the people, and the people will turn out in droves to support the leaders of that fight.

Boehner fears the default. Make Obama fear the default. Spend two weeks educating the American people on the amount of revenue coming in every month, speak of it every day, stand on the capital steps and shout at Obama about it, and then tell Obama if he fails to pay America's creditors even though there is money available, you, Boehner, will personally file the articles of impeachment for intentionally destroying America's economy over a socialist program the American people don't want. That is what a winner would do.

Then you haven't been paying attention now, have you?!

Every step of the way on this battle Senator Cruz has laid out his plan in simple terms that anyone can understand.

He has stated continually that the end game was for the House to do their constitutional duty (Budgeting) and defund Obamacare.

It was his plan to send up individual CRs each funding a separate function of government and let the Democrats own the problem. By doing this, and not including any funding for Obamacare, it shuts up the Democrats mouths that the GOP wants to shut the government down and it effectively kills Obamacare.

The added benefit of his approach is that it has smoked out the cockroaches in the GOP who pretend to be against Obamacare with their mouths, but now have nowhere to hide, because their backs are up against the wall.

It has also rallied the base, the Tea-Party in advance of the 2014 elections.

Ultimately, however, this plan requires some manhood, some political courage from the GOP Senate and House members to be successful.

OK, sure he’s only one guy, and if the House fails to do it’s job (which is seeming more likely, given the latest rhetoric), there’s not going to be any defunding.

I’ll give him this - ultimately it’s up to We the People, at the ballot box. I was looking for a little more clarity as to how he intends to change the defunding talk into action, although it’s clear that won’t happen without the strong support of the House to send over piecemeal funding resolutions. Maybe I’m overly influenced by past behavior, but I just don’t see them doing that.

So I guess I get it. Cruz’s plan is to smoke out those who support Obamacare and our job is to vote them out. A lot depends on 2014.

Mass civil disobedience is the best strategy. Look what the brave people of Cairo achieved in getting rid of the tyrant Morsi.

I’d feel more confident in that approach than with depending on House “leadership” to do the right thing. As demonstrated by this, just posted:

“House Speaker John A. Boehner said Thursday he’ll offer President Obama the short-term debt increase the White House has demanded in exchange for a framework that will open up negotiations on spending and broader budget issues”.

And so the caving begins...

I think that was his fall-back plan.

I think his first priority was to light a fire under their collective, lying, cowardly butts by using the anger of their constituents to try and force them to do the right thing, and lacking that, provide enough proof and ammunition to their constituents for the 2014 elections, to kick them out if they refused to do the right thing.

“But it’s going to be the American people who get us out.”

Ah yes, the American people. Quite the enigma are we.
For every voter like my mother who thinks FDR was the greatest president, there are those like my father who voted for Reagan-most likely the first Republican for whom he did vote.

For every young voter who has spent years being indoctrinated to “feel” as opposed to “think” there are those like my son who just got his first job and now will be asked to help fund this mess with his taxes.

For every “gimmedat” who votes for a continuation of such policies, there are those who get up every day like my husband to work to fund those very people who think it is a right to demand the prosperity of others.

For every voter who worships at the altar of his/her particular idol (be it union/gender politics/race politics) and votes accordingly, there are many others who try to live by the Judeo/Christian model and vote in accordance with that.

Yes, the American people. A divided lot are we. Have the scales tipped back in the direction to begin a restoration? Are the numbers in our favor?

Conservatives will HAVE to show up in 2014 regardless of what happens. They have to keep bringing the fight regardless of what happens. As it is, the lines have been drawn as firmly as possible with principled conservatives on one side and all the opposition on another. If they back out in 2014 it is gonna lead to a complete hard left takeover.

At the moment, it is not clear that the GOP is equipped with leaders who can properly deal with the default hysteria and can properly articulate that Obama is responsible for defaulting and not them. And so it is gonna fall on ordinary American conservatives to do so if they want to keep the fight going past the debt ceiling deadline. And if they can’t, they still have to show up in full force in 2014. The idea that they will give up in 2014 if they don;t get all their goals is extremely troubling; it shows a complete lack of fighting spirit. And if we don’t have fighting spirit, how exactly can we expect any politician we elect to represent us to have fighting spirit for us?
