While Geert Wilders and assorted online provocateurs may like to talk about banning the Qur'an as an extremist text, few take the idea seriously. Except in Russia, perhaps, where on 20 September, a court in the Russian city of Novorossiysk banned a translation of the holy book of the world's 1.2 billion Muslims.
To be fair, it is one of several available in the country. This version, the work of an Azeri theologian named Elmir Kuliyev, was declared illegal for promoting extremism through "statements about the superiority of Muslims over non-Muslims"; "negative evaluation of persons who have nothing to do with the Muslim religion"; "positive evaluation of hostile actions by Muslims against non-Muslims", and also, it was argued, inciting violence.
Unsurprisingly, the ruling which automatically places Kuliyev's Qur'an on a nationwide blacklist outraged many Russian Muslims. Russia's influential Council of Muftis denounced the verdict, and Kuliyev has one month to appeal. The ban is baffling, as the Russian authorities have little to gain by antagonising 15% of the population, including huge chunks of the republics of Tatarstan and Bashkortostan, never mind the restive republics of the Caucasus. Could it just be a case of an incompetent court gone rogue? Perhaps, but another major Muslim organisation has endorsed the verdict. Geraldine Fagan, an expert on religion in Russia, reports that "a representative of the All-Russian Muftiate a rival to the Council of Muftis defended the ruling against Kuliyev's translation of the Qur'an
From a theological point of view, Farid Salman maintained, Kuliyev's works 'correspond with the views of the "Salafi" school, not with [the] Islam that is traditional for Muslims of Russia'."

If Russia bans Islam , the entire world should follow it’s lead
Islam should be banned in every country.
Their whole plan is to destroy other nations from the inside and place their laws in effect.
As I understand it there is no such thing as a “translation” of the Koran. Only the Arabic version is holy.
Only to idiot British Leftist reporters
So there is no 1st amendment in Russia....we think that's bad
But the Russians confront millions of Muslims on their southern flank who dream of the day when push North and take the fertile land from the hated Orthodox Slavs.
The bombs that went off in the baggage claim area of Domodedovo, the Beslan massacre, the Chechen Wars...words mean things to the Russians.
They don't have to worry about the ACLU stopping them from protecting themselves.
>> “statements about the superiority of Muslims over non-Muslims”
Wait - what? Did I just read that?
Mixed thoughts about this one. Reading the Koran was certainly revealing to me about what a hateful and vile religion it is. Of course, some may read it and say “wow, I want to be a first class citizen and murder, rape and plunder my way to paradise.” It’s a tough call.
I don’t need to smell crap to know that it stinks.
The Russians are the only people on Earth who take a realistic approach to Islam.
Funny that we used to attack ‘em as the world’s premier exemplar of unrealistic government, a role now filled by Obama’s United States.
Live long enough, see everything.
When that opinion is turned against you, you may want to reconsider. Your perfume may be someone else's crap. If you want to ban anything, ban people sworn to live by that book. They are the threat.
Arabic-speaking Jews, like Arabic-speaking Christians, had been calling God "Allah" for hundreds of years before Mohammad was born --- not surprisingly, since it is simply the Arabic word for "God".
In Russia, I imagine it's an easier call. Translated Korans are used primarily for recruitment. With a population that was raised primarily in an atheist culture, the people would be more vulnerable to the "sales pitch" and less likely to read it and see how horrific it is.
It was explained to me that the name is Al-Lah, meaning, “the god”. My sister’s Persian friend says, “If the god is willing, I shall do thus and so”.
Well, the Chinese do a good job too, but I prefer the Russian approach.
You got that right. Old, "cold warrior" here. If you told me back in the early '70's that I would ever agree with ANYTHING the Soviets said or did, I would punch your face and tell not to drink too much.
Now, I have seen the worm turn and I HAVE to admit, I really do admire Pooty Poot, and what Russia has become, and the way they hold fast to certain moral values, despite the barrage of criticism.
Man, whodda thunk it? Catches me by surprise.
Good point if the Koran is deliberately mistranslated, which I don’t put past Muslims to do. The “sales pitch” is going to be made with or without the Koran however. I remain undecided.
“The Russians are the only people on Earth who take a realistic approach to Islam.”
Somehow liberals think human civilization can survive with an aggressive and growing cancer being allowed unfettered assimilation of humans.
