US House votes to ensure religious services on military bases
By a lopsided vote of 400 to 1, the US House of Representatives voted on October 7 to ensure that chaplains would be allowed to lead religious services on military bases, regardless of the temporary shutdown of the federal government.
The House vote came in response to reports that chaplains serving under contractthose who are not active-duty members of the armed forceswould not be allowed to lead services during the shutdown. That policy had threatened to make it impossible for many Catholic members of the armed forces to attend Sunday Mass or receive the sacraments.
