coerced by a federal statute passed in 1867 that took away the right to vote or hold office from all citizens who had served in the Confederate Army

Well, duh. Would you allow John Walker Lindh to vote of hold office? Well, our ancestors felt the same way about "citizens" who take up arms against their country.

They were trying to save “their country” from the evil lincoln. They took up arms to prevent the usurpation of their rights. Sound familiar? If only half as many had the stones today!
