But note how very laudatory The Hill is regarding the wily Reid. And note the article goes out of its way to protect Obama from any political fallout from Reid's aggressive, no-compromise stance -- claiming that Obama is just a spectator in all of this, and himself only wishes to compromise.

The Hill
President Obama has handed over the reins of leadership on government funding and the debt limit to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.).
Reid is now fully in charge of his partys negotiating strategy, a significant change from past showdowns with Republicans./i>
He has taken the initiative from Obama, who played the principal role in the 2011 debt-limit talks and New Years fiscal cliff deal. Some Democrats on Capitol Hill are relieved by the switch.
The majority leader has brought a more pugnacious style to the debate, bashing House conservatives as anarchists and mocking the Banana Republican mindset.

Wait, I thought compromise was a good thing? I also enjoy the Democrats' efforts (assisted by the Hill) to try to shield Obama from the political consequences of his decisions -- "Hey, Obama is just a big compromiser who wants what's best for everyone, but he's not in charge now, so don't hold any of this partisan squabbling against him."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wait, the President of the United States isn't in charge?

I can't keep excerpting, but the passage I cut has more Democrat quotes talking about how open to compromise Obama is, but that he's been sidelined by... well, by someone who has no power to sideline him. cont'd

Valerie Jarrett is sharing power with Reid now?
Obama is beginning to desperately need someone to get him out of the Shutdown mess he’s gotten himself into — just as he needed Vladimir Putin to get him out of last month’s Syrian fiasco.
But there is no Vladimir Putin figure in the Democratic party capable of restoring the pre-Shutdown status quo now that the Republicans have effectively taken over the government.
The Shutdown can go on indefinitely and become the new normal, since all necessary government services are being provided — which is the last thing Obama wants. But how can Obama prevent such a thing from happening if he’s not willing to negotiate an end to ObamaCare NOW, since every day the Republicans grow stronger while Obama and the Democrats degenerate daily into increasingly pathetic schoolyard bullies yelling bad words at the Republicans?
Obama is not running for re-election and is close to a lame duck, with a consistent low-40s approval rating. There are plenty of Senate Democrats up for re-election next year and in 2016, however. These Democrat senators are our target, not Obama, in my view. In that context, having mean old Dirty Harry as the face of the Democrat Party is ideal.
You might respond by saying that Obama approval needs to be lowered further due to the coming immigration/amnesty battle. I would respond with "One thing at a time".
What’s there to crack? This is all prelude to debt ceiling increase. GOP needs the additional leverage going in.
I like your Putin reference. Except Putin didn’t as much restore anything for Obama in the Syrian crisis as much as having cost Obama a huge price in prestige, diminished status, not to mention the personal satisfaction Putin derived from giving Sotero Sociopath the vicious political kick in thee butt he so richly deserved.
Uh, the buck stops over there.
Limbaugh Theorem
The reality is that Obama will be out of office in 3 years (thank God) and Harry Reid will not. He does not care.
