......This is a good example of why things that matter most to Texans like the Alamo remain Texan, just like the Christmas Mountains out in West Texas, said Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, referring to a misguided attempted federal land grab that drew attention back in 2008.
Texas isn't going to let government get in the way of honoring our heroes, whether it's at the Alamo or at the VLB, Patterson said.
The shrine to Texas heroes of long ago remains open. And so do the Texas Veterans Land Boards eight Texas State Veterans Homes, which take care of our living heroes, said Patterson, chairman of the Texas Veterans Land Board.
The shutdown is not stopping us from caring for our heroes, Patterson said. We do not anticipate any problems with us receiving Veterans Administration payments for nursing home care, but the VLB has more than enough funds in our veterans programs to cover the costs should federal funding cease and until this shutdown is resolved.
.....Texas has always taken care of her veterans. In 1836, the Texas General Land Office was formed, in part, to make sure veterans of the Texas Revolution were given land rights they were promised in exchange for their role in liberating Texas. In 1946, the VLB was created to provide the same for Texan veterans of a different war who helped liberate the world.
Today, the VLB serves more than 1.7 million Texas veterans of all ages. The VLBs eight Texas State Veterans Homes serve more than a thousand veterans and their families needing long-term, high-quality care.....

Preach on, brother!
I think that’s the new theme. The more things that are under Federal Government control, the more dangerous it is, as is the case with this shutdown. Power and control should be decentralized and returned to the states.
The local volunteer auxiliary stepped in staff the place and keep it open.
When the dust had cleared, what had been a source of employment for two or three state employees now no longer needed any. The local booster organization was doing without them just fine. I don't know if that's still the case, but it may very well have become permanent.
The Alamo is not a national park.
Isn’t Jerry Patterson is running for Gov.? Looks like maybe he’s just trying to get his name in the news.
a fellow SASS shooters father who keeps his fifth wheel up at the lake in Oklahoma, emailed me to say that her father had to pull up stakes and move out of there...as this is a Federally controlled lake.
Now the govt shutdown, does not prevent the government officers from coming by and giving those people citations.
I also hear that the everglades and waters around the southern tip of florida are shut down. How does one shut down a waterway?
the POSOTUS, is in for a big surprise come election day 2014 and 2016. That is if the uniformed voters get it right.
they forgot ... the alamo !
The trouble is, Vaquero, the uniformed voters rarely do... and with the DemocRATS' Justice Department supported voter fraud, we may never get another President that isn't an Obama clone--
In the long run, ya think this outrageous shutdown behavior will make more states want to take back their own land?
Jerry Patterson is one of Texas’s heroes.
We owe a lot to him in the Lone Star State!
I haven’t heard that he is running for governor, but if he is, I’ll be first in line to vote for him!
Jerry Patterson is running for lieutenant governor!!
They should let the Federal Government run the basement area.
That’s what I thought—but wasn’t sure.
Correction
He’s running for Lt. Governor.
Bye bye Dewhurst!
Just let nobama try to lay claim to the Alamo, talk about SHTF! Go ask the Messkins how that worked out for them.
I believe the Obama race voters will stay away for the midterms and unless the POSOTUS decides to thumb his nose at the constitution and somehow be allowed to run in 2016, I believe the race voters will stay home them....(unless we can get Dr Benjamin Carson or Allen West to run....)
of course the locals in San Antonio will be no help, neither will the lefties in near by Austin.....
There’s a red bike in the basement
