Tax-paying, hard-working families arent letting White House shutdown politics stop them from enjoying Americas beauty. Theyre defying the orange cones at Mount Rushmore. Theyre breaching the barrycades at Zion National Park. And now, the Badlands of South Dakota.
Noelle Bruno tweets that she and her family made it through Mount Rushmore despite the White House obstacles:
This land is your land This land is my land
From California to the New York island;
From the red wood forest to the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for you and Me.
I should probably watch that movie at some point.
That’s not what this is about. The parks and monuments are maintained by the federal government for entertainment purposes. They are non-essential and without a budget, they should not be in operation.
Most park rangers are not working because of the shutdown. If the parks are left wide open, there’s nothing to prevent people from going in and vandalizing the place.
You forgot a /sarc tag after that, right?
Speaking of that...did anyone else catch the story about eminent domain in NJ?
When the government pays for your shore protection...apparently they shore can claim your property.
“Well, if they get lost or injured hiking around mount Rushmore they shouldnt call the government for help. Some folks dont seem to understand that the federal government is shutdown. Im sure theyll have a chance to visit the federal parks and monuments in the near future. But they shouldnt insist in visiting right now.”
So, in your view Americans are bunch of helpless children that must have Uncle Sugar at the ready? Why shouldn’t they visit THEIR monuments? Is that your view that they should support Obama by not visiting? If the government is shutdown then who placed all those Barrycaids and signs saying it is shutdown? That’s right, government employees, that’s who.
Some people don’t seem to understand the federal government is NOT shutdown, sucker.
Storm the scenic turnout!!! Damn the cones!!! Free the Presidents!!!
Have you ever heard of citizen search parties? It happens all the time. If you rely on the federal government for your every breath, shame on you.
But it takes a real bastard to prevent people from stopping to take photos in a designated place to pull of and take photos.
Oh really? Like the vandalism that happened in front of the capitol and supreme court a few weeks ago WHILE the federal government was operating? Is that what you are talking about? So you are saying that all those who wish to see THEIR monument are vandals? Like the Vets? Those vandals?
Lucianne
Congratulations!
While most folks at FR are probably on the “naughty” list stored on some government server, I’m sure you just cemented your position on Obama’s “nice” list with your comment.
These people have a hell of a nerve looking at Obama’s sky without a federal permit.
So what ya gonna do if this was a planned vacation? If they're like me when I was employed, I was required to submit my tentative vacation days to my employer usually during the first couple weeks of January. If I didn't then somebody else was likely to get my preferred days........
Do you have a link to an article by chance?
Obama’s tactics seem to be working. You can’t be in favor of the government shutdown and at the same time demand that the federal parks stay open.
Just to be clear, I don’t think the federal government should be in charge of maintaining any of these parks. They should be transferred to the private sector or to the state government. But as things stand right now, the federal government is in charge. And the federal government is or should be shutdown if anybody still bothers to follow the constitution.
As part owners they don’t need anyone’s permission.
But I agree on keeping it clean.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen. ― Samuel Adams
