I've survived at least three dozen "world is ending" scares during my lifetime so far. I guess that makes me a survivor!

One of the first books I read as a child was "The Population Bomb" by Paul Ehrlich. It was on my mother's bookshelf and I was captivated by the alarming caption on the cover that read "While you are reading these words, four people will have died from starvation. Most of them children."

Even back in 1972, left-wingers were making it "about the children" and decrying that "women and minorities were hardest hit" in whatever their pet cause was at the moment.

I still remember reading that book that proclaimed that "the battle to feed humanity is over" and that "nothing can be done - all is lost." We were all going to death by 1985, making a Beatles reunion all but impossible. And pointless.

Being an easily impressionable 10-year-old, naturally I thought we were all doomed and that I would never have a chance to grow up so I was despondent for a while there. Fortunately as I matured, I began to realize that these left-wing academic "alarmists" were actually laughingstocks - court jesters to normal folk.

By the way, this scaremonger, Paul Ehrlich, at age 81, is still drawing breath and eating our food (our precious food!) today. But do you think we would at least get an "I'm sorry" for scaring us all and ruining a slice of my innocent childhood? Of course not. Even to this day, this shriveled up failure refuses to acknowledge that he was wrong and that an increased population actually increased the available food supply - as any visit to Wal-Mart will clearly show you.

Me too. I’m 81.

When I hear dire warnings like this I just shrug.
