Law enforcement sources confirmed that Miriam Carey told police in December that she was a prophet, that President Obama would place the city of Stamford under a "lockdown" and that he had her and her residence under electronic surveillance. The encounter led to Carey being taken for a mental-health evaluation.

Modifying the term mentally ill with the word seriously is pretty meaningless. In that usage, seriously isn’t at all measureable.
What defines serious mental illness? Behavior, from where I sit. So we’re still stuck - even in your construction - with waiting for them to do something, to behave in a way that speaks to ‘danger to yourself or others’.
If you have another way of determining who is and is not mentally ill, I’d like to hear it.
I agree. I know of one person who needs attention, but won’t get any. There is nothing anyone can do to force her into care, everyone has to just stand around and pretend not to see what they are seeing.
We are doing a disservice giving freedom to the seriously mentally ill. Just as we can’t give freedom to our parents with alzheimers (I have two, living with an angel of a caregiver) or our toddlers (got one of them, too - I don’t let her go for a walk down the street alone!), we should not give freedom to our loved ones and fellow citizens who are mentally ill to the point of breaking with reality. Period.
The issue is not whether you are paranoid, the issue is whether you are paranoid enough!

Don’t know the laws of your state, but here in Maryland, a family member can go to the circuit court and swear out a warrant to have the individual picked up for observation, which means a 72 hour stay with mental health professionals.
A lawyer friend suggested this approach for my mother, who had been hospitalized a handful of times for going off her bipolar meds.
Of course, the fact that not long before that an elderly woman was shot and killed by the cops serving one of those warrants (she threatened them with a knife apparently), sis and I did it the long and hard way again (5 or 6 times in 15 years) - by taking her to the ER and having the on call shrink evaluate her. No fewer than a 12-18 hour process.
Maybe not so crazy.
Another completely unsourced allegation. Since they can’t justify her murder, they must destroy her character at any costs. Once again it’s conveniently anonymous “law enforcement sources” making a claim being reported straight by a member of the MSM with no verification whatsoever.
(Mind you, if the information is actually true, these “law enforcement sources” are breaking the law (HIPAA) by publicly disclosing her private medical records. Some “law” enforcement we got there.)
Bottom line, even if every slur against her is completely true, none of it justifies the police murdering her. None of it. The US does not legally have a death penalty for failure to obey the police.
How is it that a woman with mental issues since a fall in April 2012 had custody of her child? When she started with the crazy talk it seems like someone should have stepped in to take care of that baby. Didn’t her family have concerns?

Woman with child screaming in rear seat sees no way out now is stopped at other end of street by more Rambo’s with even more guns.
Weapons drawn, screaming out “orders” to “very” upset mom, with baby screaming louder, Rambo’s do the only thing training allows them to do. Execute!
