Planning to take advantage of the beautiful fall weather with a trip to the Allegheny National Forest?
Think again.
"We're in the process of closing down our campgrounds and developed facilities, due to the lapse in funding," Allegheny National Forest Supervisor Erin Connelly said on Thursday. "Where there are gates, they will be closed."

Rimrock overlook area in the Allegheny National Forest has been closed due to the lapse in federal
government funding, according to a sign posted at the gate. The facility will reopen once Congress
restores funding.

Childish.
I’d just walk in.
Might go to Pinnacles or Point Reyes this weekend.
Hoky Smokes! My home town. I visited Rimrock many many times as a lad. It’s wierd what is going on in that little town. It has morphed into a bohemian enclave (more or less). Smart bohemians, Warren is a gorgeous town with beautiful scenery.
Back home there is a road called White Bridge Road... there is a steel bridge on the road a small truss bridge. Well back about 10 years ago, for mischief night, somebody showed up and painted the bridge... white. They did a thorough job, too... All the steel was coated... a lot of drools and such, but they painted the whole thing... the bridge as of 3 years ago was slated for replacement, but everyone in tbe neighborhood saw there was nothing wrong with it... and so as far as I know the 2 million dollar bridge replacement was on hold. If anything, it could use a fresh coat of paint... haven't been there recently... google white bridge road in quakertown, nj...
Well loose lips sink ships, but here goes. I took a ride up to the Kinzua Dam/Rimrock/Jakes Rocks and here is what I found:
There was a plastic Barrycade at the dam parking lot with the expected "Closed until further notice" sign. There were many Fall Foliage peepers there that had just drove around the stupid little plastic sawhorse. Motorcycles and cars in the lot, families out walking onto the dam and along the path on the side of the road. Life goes on.
At Jakes Rocks the gate was closed with the sign about congress' impass... and many cars parked at the locked gate, as people just ignored the gate and sign and walked in.
Same deal at Rimrock, just like the picture I posted from the paper.
Well, I made the trip for a reason, this situation begged for a tad of civil disobedience, and I suppose there is comfort knowing everyone parked at these locations were similarly saying "FUBO".
Well, I had brought along with me some tape and some printouts of various sizes of these two signs:
You know where this is going...
So, yeah, little vandal, anarchist, TEA party extremist me taped 8-1/2"x11" copies of those 2 pictures right on the gates for all to see, next to the "Closed" signage. At Rimrock there were 2 pickups parked there at the locked metal gate, so I took the last 2 0bama ones that I had printed out as 3"x5" postcards and put them under the wiperblades facing the driver.
I feel petty, but good in a way. I hope people at least take a millisecond and think about what is going on in this country. I wish I took pictures to upload, but didn't have my camera with me.
Driving back to town, I saw the gate for the consession area near the boat launch was Barrycaded (another locked metal pemanent gate) with a "Congressional Impass" sign as well, but I had run out of printouts at that point.
I hope more people out there act out. It's time. If this goes another week, boltcutters may have to be applied to these locks... the leaves are just really spectacular at these overlooks... lots of reds and oranges and yellows, still mixed in with the green.
Thanks for the update.
I have always blown off closed trail signs.
Usually the worst you find is some park employees getting naked and smoking doobies down there.
Heh! What are they gonna do when you have the goods on them?!! LOL
By the way, Hat tip.
I saw the gate for the consession area near the boat launch was Barrycaded.. At Wolfes’ run? I thought Wolfes Run Marina was private ?
I feel petty,...JEEZ, don’t. Kinzua is almost impossible to fish but it sure is fun to run two 175 hp Mercury’s up to NY and back down down again. Don’t know if that’s allowed since 1977 or so.
Thanks for the larf! ☺
Every car got a handbill... and there was a real specific joy putting one on the car with the Obama/Biden 2012 bumper sticker. There was a poor woman that just showed up with 3 10-12 year old girls and when they saw me placing these little handbills I heard them saying something worried like, "He's giving out tickets", and they were getting back in their car and so I handed one to the woman and said "This land is your land, this land is my land". A family of Indians (dots not feathers) had pulled up too and they were very confused by the gate. 2 elederly gentlemen were waiting for their wives to come back and they asked me for a few more handbills... they were in their 70's and fairly disgusted.
