CHINCOTEAGUE, Va.- The federal government has shut down the Assateague National Seashore and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. But that is not stopping residents from trying to get inside.
"if they send me a summons, I'll send it to the White House," Anna Stubbs said.
She and dozens of other protestors are rallying for the parks to reopen, so the Chincoteague economy can get back on track.
"I have a motel and I had 10 cancellations last night, we have the biggest festival we have this year, the oyster festival and they are starting to cancel for that," Stubbs said.
Patricia Bierman said the shutdown is an unnecessary show of power by the government.
"It's all political and it don't belong for the people of the country to be held back by the government," she said.
The closed gates at the parks are not just bad for the people who live in the area, it has also been a surprise for the people who arrive on vacation.
"We're going leave early because we can do more at home than here," Jeanette Lewis said.
Lewis and her husband Chuck have been coming to Chincoteague for years but say the shut down is ruining their fun.
"It's the first warm day," Chuck Lewis said. "Only humans would close a beach like that, you know what I mean. We're not going to tear the place down. There's enough supervision that I think we can enjoy the beach."
Officials from the Office of Fish and Wildlife tell WBOC the people who entered the parks illegally will be held accountable for their actions.
It is the People’s park; let the people reopen it. By force if necessary. They are public SERVANTS, NOT MASTERS!
I totally spaced it - but tomorrow was supposed to be the celebratory re-opening of the Assateague Light house.

Bammy would have a difficult time defending the entire island.
Yellowstone has a road in the north that is kept open in the winter.
MT Rushmore for one. Guards who are on duty anyway, blocked of the access road to the parking facility making it difficult for visitors to even have a pull off area to avoid blocking the road.
...and guess what, blocking the road became an issue.
Done at 8 am this morning but lost power before I could hit send. Power restored about ten am but had to remove snow from trees that still had leaves on them. Very dangerous for the trees.
You are correct, but it is Assateague that is closed, not Chincoteague! And only on the Virginia side, the Maryland side is a state park.
The local paper in S UT said that if you take the state highway that winds through Zion NP ...and stop to take pictures or “recreate”, you will be arrested. Free America from these Commies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have run out of family friendly words to describe my disdain for the thug residing in OUR house.
