What I recall at the time is that Dole, without consulting with Gingrich, went to the press after a few days of MSM horror stories about the shut down. Dole told them that “enough was enough” and he was going to pass a spending bill along the lines of what Clinton was demanding and end this terrible shutdown. it was splashed on all the headlines and lead all the news casts. Gingrich was cut off at the knees. His support in the house collapsed and he had to go along with what Dole was doing. This was also what led to Clinton being reelected, instead of losing in a landslide, which he was on track to do before that. Dole screwed us all big time. Now the myth of that event is that Republicans took it in the shorts.
