NASA may have the Right Stuff, but it’s not essential.

In fact, of all the larger government agencies, NASA is sending the largest percentage home in the government shutdown because they are considered not essential.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Department of Veterans Affairs, which usually doesn’t grab attention unless something goes wrong, has one of the highest percentage of workers considered essential and staying on. …

What is NASA doing anyway?

We don't have any more shuttles, private companies can launch rockets now, I think the military does their own (right?). What good is NASA?

Wonder if we’ll get an ‘initial claims’ report tomorrow or a ‘jobs’ report for September on Friday?

I thought we got the numbers today. 160k I only saw a quick glimpse so I could be wrong. I have been so worried about that 530 meeting and boner caving which thankfully he didn’t that I have not fully given full attention to anything else.

We visited it this past year. a truly sad experience, I wanted to choke up. We had visited there about 10 years ago, when Bush was still in office and the programs were running.

Now, with Obama killing it, the ONLY thing it does is talk about what happened in the past. NOTHING about moving ahead, leading the world in space exploration, the defense of the nation, nothing....

I am all for private space exploration, but there are national security implications involved, and our recent visit to NASA showed me just how inept the current administration is honing those possibilities.

I know the people at NASA cannot openly say so, but I thought I could detect a bit of disdain for the current clown occupying the Oval Office. He is ruining America, and their agency is just one of those suffering.

I wouldn't mind that, and would even participate, IF....

the plan was to build a huge spaceship and send all the mooselimbs rocketing into space to chase Voyager out of the Soalr System.

All of NASA should be scrapped. Let the profit motive alone rule space exploration.

That was decades ago and they could not duplicate it today. It is loaded with AA employees getting in the way of the few people who still wish to work.

I have a (liberal) friend who pointed something out to me.

In the movie Apollo 13, did you notice that there is exactly ONE black cast member?

No, not some engineer smoking and using a slide rule at Mission Control.

The black cast member is a reporter asking a question.

And rumor has it that Ron Howard was scared of being called a racist so he created even that ONE character. Lest the whole movie being condemned as some "white guy's" wet dream of accomplishment.

max americana can correct me if my friend was wrong, but I DON'T remember any other AA's being portrayed.

Shocking, because I know several AA engineers. And they trend strongly conservative.

Maybe they just weren't so visible in 1970.
